  •   Gasteria glomerata Ox Tongue Succulent, also called cow tongue succulent, is a clumping succulent native to a small rocky canyon in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. It evolved in sheltered, shaded gorges, which is why this dwarf gasteria grows well in low-light conditions that most other succulents cannot tolerate. It genuinely loves indoor life.

Kouga Gasteria earns its common name from its thick, tongue-shaped leaves that are dark green with pale silvery-green spotting and a distinctly rough, bumpy texture. Leaves stack in tight opposite pairs and slowly form dense clumping rosettes with an upright habit, staying compact at just 3 to 5 inches tall. Because of its deep roots and dense structure, it looks and performs best in a heavy pot that can anchor it properly.

When given a cool nighttime temperature drop in late winter, it produces tall, arching flower spikes lined with small tubular blooms in coral to salmon-pink shades that contrast against the dark foliage. Blooms typically appear in late winter to spring and attract hummingbirds.

This clumping succulent performs well on desks, bookshelves, and home offices where other succulents would struggle under low to medium light, including standard office LEDs. You can leave it up to ten days without water. Move it outside for summer in a shaded or dappled-light spot, keeping it away from direct sun and heavy rain. Rotate it occasionally for even, symmetrical growth, and keep it away from direct airflow from air conditioning vents or heaters.

  •   Gasteria glomerata Ox Tongue Succulent grows well in low to bright indirect light and scorches easily in south-facing windows with direct sun.

Water it every 2 to 3 weeks in summer and once a month or less in winter, letting soil dry completely between waterings.

Kouga Gasteria does best in a fast-draining mix of cactus soil blended with coarse perlite or grit at roughly a 1:1 ratio.

It prefers temperatures between 50 and 80°F and should be protected from frost and freezing conditions.

Kouga Gasteria is a slow to moderate grower that benefits from a light, balanced succulent fertilizer once in spring and once in summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 10 to 11, tolerating brief dips no lower than around 30°F before frost damage becomes a risk. It grows outdoors year-round in southern Florida, coastal and southern California, Hawaii, and the southernmost tips of Texas and Arizona. Warmer pockets of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina can also support it outside, though growers in all other states will get the best results keeping it as a low-light indoor succulent.
  • Q: How much light does Gasteria glomerata Ox Tongue Succulent need?
A: Low to medium or bright indirect light, including standard office LEDs. Keep it away from direct sun, especially south-facing windows, which cause leaf scorch.

    Q: Is this plant pet-friendly?
A: Gasteria glomerata Ox Tongue Succulent is non-toxic to cats and dogs, though the sap can occasionally cause mild skin or paw irritation with prolonged contact.

Q: How big does Kouga Gasteria get?
A: It stays compact and dwarf-sized, typically reaching only 3 to 5 inches tall as a clumping rosette, making it suitable for small pots and tight spaces.

Q: What's the best way to propagate it?
A: Kouga Gasteria produces offsets, or pups, that form around the base of the mother plant. Simply separate a pup with some roots attached and pot it into well-draining succulent mix.

Q: Can Kouga Gasteria survive a trip without water?
A: It can go up to 10 days without water.

Q: How do I know when to water?
A: Leaves will soften or wilt slightly when the soil dries out. Check soil moisture regularly by sticking your finger about an inch deep; if it feels moist, wait another day or two before watering.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
