  •   Hoya 'Sunrise' (Hoya lacunosa x obscura hybrid) is a trailing wax plant in the Apocynaceae family, native to tropical Southeast Asia where it grows in warm, humid environments with filtered light and good airflow. It earned its name from its dramatic foliage color shift, transforming from green to deep red, burgundy, and orange under bright light conditions.

The leaves are small to medium, slightly cupped, and waxy to the touch, arranged densely along long vining stems that trail from a hanging basket or shelf. The thick, textured leaves grow so densely along the stems that the plant fills a hanging planter quickly with a full, trailing habit. The leaves shift from green to red and orange in bright light, a sun-stress effect that makes the same plant look entirely different depending on its location.

It produces clusters of small, star-shaped flowers with a sweet fragrance most noticeable in the evening. A slight drop in nighttime temperature encourages blooming, so the plant may skip flowering if kept too warm year-round. The flowers appear on peduncles that should never be removed, as it reblooms from the same spurs season after season.

Position it near an east or west-facing window, on a kitchen shelf where it benefits from ambient moisture, or in a hanging planter on a high shelf. Move it outside in summer to a sheltered spot with filtered light, keeping it away from heavy rain and direct afternoon sun, then bring it back inside before nighttime temperatures drop below 55°F. You can leave it up to ten days without water. It is non-toxic and safe for cats and dogs.

  •   Hoya 'Sunrise' grows well in bright indirect light and colors up fastest in east or west-facing windows.

Water it every 10-14 days, allowing the top half of soil to dry completely between waterings.

Hoya Sunrise does best in a well-draining mix of orchid bark, perlite, and a small amount of potting soil.

It prefers temperatures between 60-85°F and should never be exposed to frost or temperatures below 50°F.

Hoya Sunrise is a moderate grower that benefits from a balanced or phosphorus-rich fertilizer every 2-4 weeks during the growing season.

It is hardy in USDA zones 10-11 and grows outdoors year-round where temperatures stay above 35-40°F. It grows permanently in Hawaii, southern Florida, and the southernmost parts of California and Texas. It can move outdoors in warmer months in Arizona, Georgia, Louisiana, South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, Nevada, and coastal Oregon, but must return indoors before autumn temperatures cool.
  • Q: Is Hoya 'Sunrise' safe for homes with cats and dogs?
A: It is non-toxic and safe for both cats and dogs.

Q: What happens if I underwater this plant?
A: Hoya 'Sunrise' will droop or develop soft leaves before wilting, giving you time to water before severe damage.

Q: Can Hoya Sunrise survive a 10-day vacation without watering?
    A: Yes.

Q: Which window direction works best for red leaf development?
A: Hoya Sunrise colors up fastest in east or west-facing windows; avoid harsh south-facing exposure, which can scorch the leaves.

Q: How long does it take Hoya Sunrise to bloom after purchase?
A: Blooming depends on maturity and temperature, but established plants flower when given a slight nighttime temperature drop.

Q: Can I propagate this plant at home?
A: Hoya Sunrise propagates readily from stem cuttings in water or soil; ensure each cutting has at least two nodes for best results.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
*** We pack carefully to protect each plant during transit, so larger orders may arrive in multiple packages.
