  •   Hoya 'Rope Plant' Variegated (Hoya carnosa compacta variegata) is a rare collector hoya from the Apocynaceae family, native to East Asia and Australia where it naturally climbs and trails through humid tropical environments. This slow-growing trailing plant has captured plant lovers worldwide with its sculptural, twisting foliage and variegation.

Hoya Carnosa Variegata produces densely packed, curled and cupped leaves that spiral along cascading vines, creating a rope-like appearance unlike almost any other houseplant. Each leaf shows a blend of deep green, creamy white, and soft yellow variegation, with a waxy, succulent-like texture. The trailing habit makes it a standout in a hanging basket, where those twisting ropes drape downward along the length of the vines.

When given a slight night temperature drop, it produces clusters of small, star-shaped pink and white waxy blooms that carry a sweet, honey-like fragrance. Flowers emerge from spurs on mature vines and should never be trimmed, as the plant reblooms from the same points season after season.

Hoya Carnosa Variegata grows well hanging near a kitchen window where ambient moisture keeps humidity naturally elevated. This pet-friendly plant purifies indoor air, filtering formaldehyde and other toxins while releasing oxygen at night. Move it outside for summer in a sheltered spot, but it needs protection from rain and direct sun to prevent leaf scorch. You can leave it up to ten days without water.

  •   Hoya 'Rope Plant' Variegated grows well in bright indirect light and scorches easily in south-facing windows, so east or west exposure works best.

Water it every 10–14 days in summer and every 3–4 weeks in winter, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings.

Hoya Carnosa Variegata does best in a chunky, fast-draining mix of perlite, orchid bark, and potting soil to prevent root rot.

It prefers temperatures between 60–85°F and should never be exposed to frost or cold drafts from AC or heating vents.

Hoya Carnosa Variegata is a slow-growing plant that benefits from balanced liquid fertilizer applied monthly during spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 10–11, tolerating minimum temperatures around 35°F before cold becomes damaging. It grows outdoors year-round in southern Florida, Hawaii, coastal southern California, and the warmest pockets of southern Texas and Arizona. It does well outside through the warmer months in Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, South Carolina, and lower elevations of Nevada with seasonal protection as temperatures drop.
  • Q: Is Hoya 'Rope Plant' Variegated safe for cats and dogs?
A: It is non-toxic to cats and dogs.

Q: What window direction prevents leaf scorch on this plant?
A: Hoya 'Rope Plant' Variegated scorches in direct afternoon sun, so place it in an east or west window away from south-facing exposure.

Q: How fast does Hoya Carnosa Variegata grow?
A: It grows slowly, which makes it a rare collector specimen. Consistent warmth, humidity, and bright indirect light encourage steady growth.

Q: Can I grow this plant in a hanging basket?
A: Hoya Carnosa Variegata displays its trailing rope-like vines beautifully in a hanging basket, where the sculptural form cascades downward for visual impact.

Q: Does Hoya Carnosa Variegata need humidity?
A: It performs best with higher humidity levels. Placement near a kitchen or bathroom provides natural moisture without exposing it to direct airflow from AC or heating vents.

Q: How long can this plant go without water?
A: Hoya Carnosa Variegata can survive up to ten days without water.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
*** We pack carefully to protect each plant during transit, so larger orders may arrive in multiple packages.
