  •   Hoya Carnosa, also called the wax plant or porcelain flower, is a trailing houseplant native to East Asia and Australia. In its native forests, it grows as a climbing vine through tropical and subtropical regions. This houseplant has earned popularity worldwide for its thick waxy foliage and air-purifying qualities.

The plant features deep green, oval to elliptical leaves that are 2-4 inches long, with a distinctly waxy texture that gives the wax plant its common name. Some varieties have silvery flecks across the leaf surface. It produces long, flexible vines that trail over the edges of hanging baskets or high shelves.

Hoya Carnosa blooms with clusters of small, star-shaped flowers in soft pink and white, each with a porcelain-like, glistening appearance that inspired the porcelain flower nickname. The flowers carry a sweet, honey-like fragrance and typically appear from spring through summer, often returning year after year on the same flower spurs. A slight drop in nighttime temperatures helps trigger blooming, and once buds form, the plant prefers to stay in one location.

You can leave it up to ten days without water. It grows well near kitchen humidity. You can move it outside in summer or position it in a bedroom, where it filters formaldehyde and other household toxins while releasing oxygen at night. The plant is non-toxic to cats and dogs, though its milky sap can cause mild skin or paw irritation if chewed. It prefers a stable spot and dislikes frequent relocation.

  •   Hoya Carnosa grows well in bright indirect light, ideally positioned near an east or west-facing window away from harsh direct sun.

Water it every 10-14 days during summer and every 3-4 weeks in winter, allowing the soil to dry between waterings.

Hoya Carnosa grows well in a well-draining mix of potting soil, perlite, and orchid bark to prevent root rot.

It prefers temperatures between 60-85°F and should be kept away from AC vents and heater drafts.

Hoya Carnosa is a moderate grower that benefits from a balanced liquid fertilizer applied monthly during the active spring and summer season.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9-11, tolerating temperatures down to around 40°F before cold becomes damaging. It grows outdoors year-round in Florida, California, Texas, Arizona, Hawaii, Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, and Nevada. Coastal areas of Oregon and Washington within the warmer edges of zone 9 may also support it in sheltered microclimates.
  • Q: Is Hoya Carnosa safe to keep around cats and dogs?
A: It is non-toxic to cats and dogs. The milky sap can cause mild skin or paw irritation, so placing it on a high shelf is a good precaution.

Q: What should I do if the leaves start to yellow?
A: Hoya Carnosa leaves yellow when soil stays wet too long. Let the soil dry out more between waterings and ensure your pot has drainage holes.

Q: How long does it take for Hoya Carnosa to produce flowers?
A: Blooms typically appear in spring through summer when the plant is mature and receives a slight temperature drop at night. Once buds form, avoid moving it.

Q: Can this plant grow under artificial light?
A: Hoya Carnosa can adapt to office LED lighting if it stays on for 10-12 hours daily, though growth may be slower than in natural light.

Q: How do I propagate Hoya Carnosa?
A: Take 3-4 inch stem cuttings with at least one node and root them in water or moist perlite. Roots typically develop within 4-6 weeks in warm, bright conditions.

Q: Does this plant filter indoor air?
A: Hoya Carnosa filters formaldehyde and other household toxins while releasing oxygen at night, making it especially beneficial in bedrooms.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
