  •   Hoya 'Australis', also called the honey plant, is a tropical waxvine native to Australia, native to coastal rainforests and rocky hillsides across Queensland and New South Wales. Part of the Apocynaceae family, this trailing houseplant earns its common name from its fragrant blooms and has been collected by houseplant enthusiasts for generations.

The foliage consists of thick, waxy, oval leaves in deep green that glow in bright indirect light. Long, flexible vines trail freely, making it a natural choice for hanging baskets or high shelves where the stems can drape downward. Each leaf has a plump, polished appearance thanks to its succulent-like structure, which stores moisture and keeps the plant attractive year-round.

Hoya Australis produces clusters of small, star-shaped white flowers with pink-red centers, typically blooming in spring through summer. The fragrance is sweet and honey-like, especially noticeable in the evening. A slight drop in nighttime temperature during late winter encourages budding.

Hoya Australis is an air purifying plant that filters formaldehyde and other indoor toxins from living rooms, kitchens, and home offices. Move it outside in summer to a sheltered, shaded spot on a patio, but keep it covered from rain and bring it back indoors before nighttime temperatures fall below 50°F. The plant is non-toxic to cats and dogs. Rotate it regularly for even growth and keep it away from AC vents and heater drafts. You can leave it up to ten days without water.

  •   Hoya 'Australis' grows well in bright indirect light and tolerates medium light, including office LEDs, but scorches in harsh south-facing windows.

Water it every 10-14 days during the growing season, allowing the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings.

Hoya Australis does best in a fast-draining mix of perlite, orchid bark, and standard potting soil to prevent root rot.

It prefers temperatures between 60–95°F and should never be exposed to frost or temperatures below 50°F.

Hoya Australis is a moderate-to-fast grower in warm months; feed it with a balanced liquid fertilizer monthly in spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 10–11 and grows outdoors year-round in South Florida, coastal and Southern California, Hawaii, the lower Rio Grande Valley in Texas, and parts of Southern Arizona. It can be grown outside through the warm months in Georgia, South Carolina, Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, Nevada, Oregon, and most of Texas before being brought indoors for winter.
  • Q: Is Hoya 'Australis' safe for pets?
A: It is non-toxic to cats and dogs.

Q: How do I encourage blooming?
A: Hoya 'Australis' flowers most reliably when it experiences a slight nighttime temperature drop in late winter or early spring, and avoid moving it once buds form, as it drops flowers when relocated.

Q: Does Hoya Australis need a hanging container?
A: It's a trailing plant that looks best in a hanging basket or trailing from a high shelf, though it can grow on a moss pole or support if you prefer vertical growth.

Q: What happens if light is too intense?
A: Hoya Australis develops brown scorch marks on the leaves when placed in harsh direct sun, so a spot with bright indirect light keeps the foliage unblemished.

Q: Can Hoya Australis survive outdoors in winter?
A: It survives year-round only in USDA zones 10–11; in cooler regions, bring it indoors before nighttime temperatures drop below 50°F.

Q: How do I propagate the honey plant?
A: Hoya Australis propagates easily from stem cuttings with at least two nodes placed in water or moist perlite during warm months; roots develop within a few weeks in humid conditions.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
*** We pack carefully to protect each plant during transit, so larger orders may arrive in multiple packages.
