  •   Epipremnum 'Skeleton Key', also called Skeleton Key Pothos, is a rare fenestrated climbing houseplant in the Epipremnum genus native to the tropical forests of Southeast Asia. This vining aroid naturally climbs trees in warm, humid conditions and has become popular among collectors for its distinctive leaf structure and care requirements suited to beginners.

It develops deeply fenestrated, pinnate leaves with cuts and holes along the blade that resemble the silhouette of a skeleton key. The foliage emerges in waxy green and becomes more dramatically shaped as the plant matures and climbs. Long vining stems trail or climb depending on support, making it equally effective in a hanging basket or trained up a moss pole.

Epipremnum 'Skeleton Key' rarely flowers in typical indoor settings, so the visual appeal comes entirely from the foliage. It also filters formaldehyde and other indoor toxins from the air.

Rotate it regularly so every side receives even light, and position it near a moisture source like a kitchen where natural humidity supports growth. You can leave it up to ten days without water. Keep it on a high shelf well out of reach of cats and dogs, as the sap can cause skin or paw irritation.

  •   Pothos Skeleton Key grows well in medium to bright indirect light and scorches in direct south-facing sun.

Water it every 7 to 10 days, allowing the top inch of soil to dry before watering again.

Epipremnum 'Skeleton Key' grows well in a mix of standard potting soil, perlite, and coco coir for moisture balance.

It prefers temperatures between 65 and 85°F and cannot tolerate frost.

Epipremnum 'Skeleton Key' is a fast-growing vine that benefits from a balanced liquid fertilizer applied monthly during spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 10 to 12, where temperatures rarely dip below 30 to 35°F. It grows outdoors year-round in Hawaii, southern Florida, southern California, southern Texas, and southern Arizona. In cooler states including Oregon, Nevada, Georgia, South Carolina, Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, and beyond, it is best grown indoors or moved outside only during warm summer months.
  • Q: How much light does Pothos Skeleton Key need?
A: Medium to bright indirect light brings out the best leaf development. Position it near an east or west-facing window to avoid the intensity of south-facing sun that will scorch the foliage.

Q: Is the sap toxic to my pets?
A: Pothos Skeleton Key sap can cause skin or paw irritation if ingested. A high shelf keeps it safely out of reach.

Q: How fast does Epipremnum 'Skeleton Key' grow?
A: It can produce several new leaves per month during the growing season when provided with adequate light and warmth.

Q: What's the best way to propagate this plant?
A: Epipremnum 'Skeleton Key' roots easily from stem cuttings with at least one node placed in water or moist sphagnum moss until roots develop, then pot into well-draining soil.

Q: Can Skeleton Key Pothos handle extended time away from home?
A: It can survive up to ten days without water.

Q: Where can I grow this outdoors?
A: Skeleton Key Pothos grows year-round outdoors in Hawaii, southern Florida, southern California, southern Texas, and southern Arizona. In other states, move it outside only during warm summer months and bring it back inside before frost.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
*** We pack carefully to protect each plant during transit, so larger orders may arrive in multiple packages.
