  •   Peperomia Obtusifolia Variegata, also called the variegated baby rubber plant or pepper face plant, is a compact tropical perennial in the Piperaceae family. It originates from the tropical and subtropical regions of Central America, South America, and the Caribbean, where it grows as an understory plant in humid forest environments.

The leaves are thick, glossy, and spoon-shaped, with creamy yellow-to-white margins surrounding a green center that deepens toward the midrib. Each leaf has a slightly cupped surface and a waxy texture that holds moisture well. Variegated Baby stays compact and upright, with stems that branch outward as the plant matures, and individual leaves can reach about 2-4 inches across on a plant that typically stays under 12 inches tall.

It produces thin, elongated flower spikes called spadix-style inflorescences, pale green or cream in color, that appear occasionally in spring and summer. The blooms have no noticeable fragrance. Variegated Baby is also a confirmed air-purifying plant that filters formaldehyde and other toxins from indoor air.

Move it outside for summer in a sheltered spot, and bring it back in before temperatures drop, keeping it covered from rain since sitting water on the leaves can cause rot. It thrives near kitchen moisture and does well in a terrarium where humidity stays steady. Variegated Baby is sensitive to being moved frequently, and keeping it in one consistent spot helps it settle. This plant is pet friendly.

  •   Peperomia Obtusifolia Variegata grows well in bright indirect light and handles medium light, including office fluorescent and LED setups. It scorches in a south-facing window and needs rotating every few weeks for even growth.

Water it every 10-14 days, allowing the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings. It wilts slightly when dry and is prone to root rot if kept consistently wet.

Variegated Baby does best in a well-draining mix of potting soil and perlite or a cactus blend. Good drainage is more important than soil richness for this plant.

It prefers temperatures between 65°F and 80°F and is sensitive to cold drafts from air conditioning vents and heating units. Keep it away from direct airflow, though it tolerates dry heated indoor air reasonably well.

Variegated Baby is a slow-to-moderate grower that stays compact and bushy over time. Feed it with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength once a month during spring and summer only.

It is hardy in USDA zones 10-12, tolerating minimum temperatures around 30°F-35°F before cold damage occurs. It grows outdoors year-round in Hawaii, southern Florida, coastal Southern California, southern Texas, and parts of Arizona. In cooler zones, it overwinters well indoors and can move outside in summer once nighttime temperatures stay above 55°F.
  • Q: How much light does Peperomia Obtusifolia Variegata need?
A: A north- or east-facing window works well, or set it a few feet back from a bright west window. The leaves develop brown patches or bleaching when exposed to direct sun through a south-facing glass.

Q: How do I know when to water it?
A: Peperomia Obtusifolia Variegata wilts slightly and the leaves feel less firm when it needs water. Check the top inch of soil first — if it still feels damp, wait a few more days before watering.

Q: Is Variegated Baby safe for cats and dogs?
A: Yes, it is non-toxic to cats and dogs. This plant is pet friendly and safe to keep in a home with animals.

Q: Can I leave it unwatered while I travel?
A: Variegated Baby stores moisture in its thick leaves and can go up to ten days without water.

Q: How fast does Variegated Baby grow?
A: Growth is slow to moderate, and the plant stays compact, usually under 12 inches tall. You won't need to repot frequently.

Q: Can I put it in a terrarium?
A: Variegated Baby does well in an open terrarium where air can still circulate. Avoid sealed setups that trap too much moisture around the roots.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
*** We pack carefully to protect each plant during transit, so larger orders may arrive in multiple packages.
