    •   Fern Asparagus 'Plumosa', also called lace fern, is a trailing houseplant in the Asparagaceae family native to southern Africa, where it grows in humid forest understories (Asparagus setaceus). It climbs and spreads through scrubby woodland edges, which explains its love of warmth and moisture indoors.

        The foliage grows in flat, horizontal sprays of thread-fine, feathery cladodes arranged so tightly they look like soft green plumes. Young stems sprawl and arch outward, eventually trailing long enough to spill from a hanging basket. The texture is feather-soft to the touch, and the overall layering gives each stem a tiered, fern-like appearance even though it is not a true fern.

        Plumosa Fern occasionally produces tiny white flowers along its stems, followed by small dark berries. The blooms are modest and short-lived, but the berries that follow are worth noting: cats and dogs shouldn't be left to nibble or eat the plant, and the sap can cause skin and paw irritation on contact, so it is best placed on a high shelf out of reach of pets and away from small children.
