  •   Fern Asparagus 'Plumosa', also called lace fern, is a trailing houseplant in the Asparagaceae family native to southern Africa, where it grows in humid forest understories (Asparagus setaceus). It climbs and spreads through scrubby woodland edges, which explains its love of warmth and moisture indoors.

The foliage grows in flat, horizontal sprays of thread-fine, feathery cladodes arranged so tightly they look like soft green plumes. Young stems sprawl and arch outward, eventually trailing long enough to spill from a hanging basket. The texture is feather-soft to the touch, and the overall layering gives each stem a tiered, fern-like appearance even though it is not a true fern.

Plumosa Fern occasionally produces tiny white flowers along its stems, followed by small dark berries. The blooms are modest and short-lived, but the berries that follow are worth noting: cats and dogs shouldn't be left to nibble or eat the plant, and the sap can cause skin and paw irritation on contact, so it is best placed on a high shelf out of reach of pets and away from small children.

Hang Plumosa Fern near a kitchen window, where ambient moisture from cooking keeps humidity levels up. It thrives in terrariums for the same reason, and the trailing stems suit a hanging hook or a high shelf where they can drape freely. Rotate the pot a quarter turn each week so every side receives even light. The plant is sensitive to being moved to a new spot once settled, so choose its location carefully before it puts on new growth. Move it outside for summer in a sheltered spot, and keep it covered from heavy rain. It purifies indoor air and filters formaldehyde and other household toxins, and the feathery foliage makes it one of the more recognizable trailing houseplants for bohemian decor arrangements.

  •   Fern Asparagus 'Plumosa' grows well in bright indirect light, away from south-facing windows where direct sun scorches the foliage.

Water it every 7-10 days, letting the top inch of soil dry out slightly between waterings; it wilts when dry.

Plumosa Fern does best in a well-draining, peat-based mix with added perlite to prevent waterlogging.

It prefers temperatures between 60°F and 75°F and is sensitive to cold drafts from air conditioning or heating vents.

Plumosa Fern is a fast-growing trailing plant; feed it a balanced liquid fertilizer every two weeks during spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9-12, tolerating outdoor conditions down to around 25°F-30°F before frost damage occurs. It grows outdoors year-round in Florida, Hawaii, California, Texas, Louisiana, Georgia, Arizona, and South Carolina. In cooler months, it can stay outdoors into early autumn in zone 9 before temperatures drop too far.
  • Q: Is Fern Asparagus 'Plumosa' safe around pets and children?
A: Cats and dogs shouldn't be left to nibble or eat the plant, and the sap can cause skin and paw irritation on contact. Keep it on a high shelf away from small children as well.

Q: How do I know when my plant needs watering?
A: Fern Asparagus 'Plumosa' wilts slightly when the soil has dried out too long. Check the top inch of soil and water when it feels dry to the touch.

Q: Can Plumosa Fern grow under office lighting?
A: Yes, it can manage under bright LED office lighting as long as the fixture is close enough to provide consistent brightness throughout the day.

Q: How do I keep my plant from yellowing or dropping needles?
A: Plumosa Fern drops its fine cladodes when humidity is too low or when placed near an air conditioning or heating vent. Move it away from direct airflow and mist around it regularly or use a pebble tray with water.

Q: Does Plumosa Fern need a special pot?
A: Because it develops deep roots, a heavier pot helps prevent it from tipping as the trailing stems grow longer. A hanging hook is also useful for giving the stems room to drape.

Q: How fast does this plant grow?
A: Plumosa Fern is a fast-growing houseplant and can put out several new stems during a single growing season. Fertilizing every two weeks in spring and summer keeps that pace steady.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
*** We pack carefully to protect each plant during transit, so larger orders may arrive in multiple packages.
