  •   Croton 'Sunny Star' (Codiaeum variegatum) is a tropical evergreen shrub native to the rainforests of Southeast Asia, the Pacific Islands, and northern Australia. It belongs to the Euphorbiaceae family and grows naturally in warm, humid forest edges and open clearings.

The leaves are long, narrow, and glossy, splashed with yellow and green in irregular patterns across each blade. New growth tends to emerge in bright yellow-green tones, with older leaves deepening to darker green as the plant matures. 'Sunny Star' holds an upright, bushy form and can spread outward as it grows, so it benefits from regular rotation to keep all sides evenly developed.

Crotons produce small, inconspicuous flowers on slender spikes, but 'Sunny Star' is grown for its foliage rather than its blooms. It purifies indoor air by filtering airborne toxins, including formaldehyde, as part of its natural leaf activity.

Keep 'Sunny Star' away from air conditioning vents and heaters, as moving air from either source causes leaf drop. It dislikes being relocated and will often shed leaves when moved to a new spot, so choose its position carefully. You can move it outside for summer, though it needs shelter from direct rainfall. The sap causes skin and paw irritation on contact, cats and dogs shouldn't be left to nibble or eat the plant, and it is best placed away from small children, ideally on a high shelf out of reach.

  •   Croton 'Sunny Star' grows well in bright indirect light, away from harsh south-facing windows that can scorch the leaves.

Water it thoroughly when the top inch of soil feels dry, roughly every one to two weeks depending on conditions.

'Sunny Star' does best in a well-draining, peat-based potting mix with perlite added for aeration.

It prefers temperatures between 60°F and 85°F and drops leaves quickly when exposed to cold drafts or sudden temperature swings.

'Sunny Star' is a moderate grower that benefits from a balanced liquid fertilizer applied monthly during spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 11 to 12, where temperatures stay reliably above 40°F year-round. It grows outdoors in Hawaii and in the warmest frost-free pockets of southern Florida. It performs best as an indoor container plant across the rest of the continental United States.
  • Q: How much light does Croton 'Sunny Star' need?
A: Place it within a few feet of an east- or west-facing window. A south-facing window can scorch the leaf edges, so a sheer curtain helps filter the intensity.

Q: How do I know when it needs water?
A: Croton 'Sunny Star' wilts slightly when the soil has been dry too long. Check by pressing a finger about an inch into the soil — if it feels dry, it is time to water.

Q: Is 'Sunny Star' safe to have around pets?
A: Cats and dogs shouldn't be left to nibble or eat it. The sap also causes skin and paw irritation on contact, so handling should be done with care.

Q: How do I keep it from dropping leaves?
A: 'Sunny Star' drops leaves when moved, exposed to cold drafts, or placed near an AC or heater vent. Once it settles into a stable spot with consistent warmth and humidity, leaf drop typically slows.

Q: Does 'Sunny Star' need humidity?
A: It does best in high humidity. Placing it near kitchen moisture, using a pebble tray with water, or running a nearby humidifier all help keep the leaves in good condition.

Q: Can this plant go outside in summer?
A: 'Sunny Star' can move outside once temperatures are consistently above 60°F, but it needs a sheltered spot with cover from rain and protection from direct midday sun.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
*** We pack carefully to protect each plant during transit, so larger orders may arrive in multiple packages.
