  •   Croton Petra 'Joseph's Coat' (Codiaeum variegatum 'Petra') is a tropical foliage plant in the Euphorbiaceae family, native to the forests and scrublands of Southeast Asia, the Pacific Islands, and northern Australia. It grows as an upright bushy shrub and is widely grown as a tropical houseplant for its multicolor leaves.

The leaves are broad, leathery, and oval to lance-shaped, reaching up to 12 inches long on a mature plant. Each leaf carries a mix of green, yellow, orange, red, and burgundy-red, with the colors distributed in irregular patches and along contrasting veins. 'Joseph's Coat' holds these colors across multiple leaf generations at once, so older and newer leaves sit side by side in different color stages. It grows in an upright bushy form, with leaves arranged densely along thick stems.

It produces small, inconspicuous flowers on long stalks, but variegated croton is grown entirely for its colorful foliage rather than its blooms. 'Joseph's Coat' purifies indoor air and filters formaldehyde and other toxins from the environment. It wilts slightly when dry, giving a clear visual cue that watering is needed.

Keep 'Joseph's Coat' away from air conditioning vents and heating units, as moving air dries out the leaves and can cause drop. It is sensitive to being relocated, and may shed leaves when first moved to a new spot. Move it outside in summer where warmth and natural humidity suit it well. Cats, dogs, and small children should not have access to it, as the sap causes skin and paw irritation and the plant is harmful if ingested. Place it on a high shelf or in a room that small children cannot enter unsupervised.

  •   Croton Petra 'Joseph's Coat' grows well in bright indirect light, away from direct south-facing sun that scorches the leaves.

Water it thoroughly every 7-10 days, allowing the top inch of soil to dry between waterings.

'Joseph's Coat' does best in a well-draining, peat-based mix with added perlite for aeration.

It prefers temperatures between 60°F and 85°F and should not drop below 55°F.

'Joseph's Coat' is a moderate grower; feed it with a balanced liquid fertilizer monthly during spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 11-12, where frost does not occur. It grows outdoors year-round in Hawaii and South Florida. It can move outside for summer in warmer states including Texas, California, Georgia, and Louisiana, then return indoors before temperatures approach 55°F.
  • Q: How much light does Croton Petra 'Joseph's Coat' need?
A: Place it a few feet back from an east or west-facing window. A south window works only if a sheer curtain filters the direct rays, as unfiltered south-facing sun burns the leaves.

Q: How do I know when to water it?
A: Croton Petra 'Joseph's Coat' wilts slightly and the leaves lose a little of their firmness when the soil has dried out too long. Check the top inch of soil and water when it feels dry to the touch.

Q: Is 'Joseph's Coat' safe around pets?
A: Cats and dogs should be kept away from it. The sap causes skin and paw irritation on contact, and the plant is harmful if chewed or eaten.

Q: Why is my plant dropping leaves after I moved it?
A: 'Joseph's Coat' is sensitive to changes in location. Leaf drop after a move is a common response and usually slows once it adjusts to the new spot.

Q: Does 'Joseph's Coat' need extra humidity?
A: Yes, it needs high humidity to stay in good condition. Placing it near a kitchen sink or grouping it with other plants helps maintain the moisture level it prefers.

Q: How fast does it grow?
A: 'Joseph's Coat' grows at a moderate pace, putting out new leaves steadily through spring and summer with consistent warmth, light, and monthly feeding.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
