  •   Croton 'Gold Dust', also called Gold Dust Croton, is a broadleaf tropical shrub in the family Euphorbiaceae, native to the tropical forests of Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands. It belongs to the species Codiaeum variegatum and has been cultivated widely as a colorful houseplant and outdoor specimen in warm climates.

The leaves are broad, glossy, and oval, reaching up to 6 inches long, with a deep green base scattered heavily with yellow spots and speckles across the surface. New growth often emerges with brighter yellow markings that deepen as the leaf matures. The plant grows in a bushy, upright form with stems that branch outward from a central base.

'Gold Dust' can produce small, star-shaped flowers on slender racemes, though blooms are inconspicuous and appear infrequently indoors. It filters formaldehyde and other airborne toxins from indoor air. All parts of the plant are toxic to cats, dogs, and humans if ingested.

Keep 'Gold Dust' away from rain and outdoor wet conditions, as excess moisture on the foliage and roots can cause leaf drop and root rot. It prefers consistent indoor humidity and benefits from regular misting or a pebble tray with water beneath the pot. The vivid variegated leaves hold their yellow spotting best when the plant receives steady bright indirect light throughout the year.

  •   Croton 'Gold Dust' thrives in bright indirect light, receiving at least four to six hours daily.

Water it every seven to ten days, allowing the top inch of soil to dry between sessions.

'Gold Dust' does best in a well-draining mix of potting soil, perlite, and a small amount of peat.

It prefers temperatures between 65°F and 85°F and drops leaves quickly below 55°F.

'Gold Dust' is a slow-growing shrub; feed it a balanced liquid fertilizer monthly during spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 11 to 12, tolerating outdoor conditions where temperatures stay above 50°F year-round. It grows outdoors in Hawaii and southern Florida, where frost is rare to absent. It performs as a permanent outdoor plant in Puerto Rico and other U.S. territories within those zones.
  • Q: Is Croton 'Gold Dust' safe for pets and children?
A: No. All parts of the plant are toxic if ingested and can cause mouth irritation, vomiting, and skin reactions on contact. Keep it out of reach of pets and young children.

Q: How do I know if this plant is getting too much or too little light?
A: Croton 'Gold Dust' will drop leaves and lose yellow spotting in low light. In direct harsh sun, the leaf edges scorch and turn brown. A bright spot a few feet from an east- or west-facing window works well.

Q: Can 'Gold Dust' be kept outside during summer?
A: Yes, move it outdoors to a sheltered spot with indirect or filtered light. Keep it under an overhang or canopy so rain does not soak the foliage and soil repeatedly.

Q: Why is my plant dropping leaves after I brought it home?
A: 'Gold Dust' is sensitive to changes in temperature, humidity, and light, and leaf drop is a common response to the transition. Keep it in a stable, warm spot away from air vents and cold drafts, and it should settle within a few weeks.

Q: Does Gold Dust Croton help clean indoor air?
A: Yes. It filters formaldehyde and other toxins from the air, which makes it useful in rooms with new furniture, flooring, or paint.

Q: How large does this plant get indoors?
A: Gold Dust Croton typically reaches 2 to 3 feet tall indoors under average home conditions. In outdoor tropical climates, it can grow up to 6 feet.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
