  •   Callisia Repens, also called Turtle Vine, is a trailing succulent native to tropical regions of Central and South America. It belongs to the Sedum genus and grows well in warm, humid environments, adapting as a houseplant in Zones 9 through 11. This succulent produces compact trailing growth and air-purifying properties.

The leaves are tiny and rounded, overlapping in neat rows along cascading stems to create the turtle-shell pattern that inspired its common name. Foliage shifts between green and purple tones depending on light exposure, with each plant showing its own color variation. The trailing growth form suits hanging baskets and terrariums where the creeping stems cascade freely.

Callisia Repens produces small white to pale pink blooms when conditions align, particularly when nighttime temperatures drop consistently below daytime warmth. The flowers appear seasonally but are modest in scale. For flowering to occur, avoid placing it near heating or cooling vents that prevent the natural temperature swing it needs.

This air-purifying houseplant actively filters indoor toxins including formaldehyde. Move it outside during summer to a bright, sheltered location away from harsh midday sun and heavy rain for a growth boost. Keep it on a high shelf or hanging hook, as the sap can cause skin and paw irritation in pets and children. You can leave it up to ten days without water during cooler months.

  •   Callisia Repens Sedum (Turtle Vine) grows well in bright indirect light and scorches in direct south-facing sun, so rotate it regularly for even growth.

Water it every 7 to 10 days during the growing season, allowing the top inch of soil to dry between waterings. Wilting indicates it needs water.

Callisia Repens does best in a well-draining mix of standard potting soil combined with perlite or coarse sand to prevent root rot.

It prefers temperatures between 60 and 85°F and suffers damage below 50°F, as it is not frost-tolerant.

Callisia Repens is a moderate to fast grower that benefits from a balanced liquid fertilizer applied monthly during spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA Zones 8 through 11, with minimum frost tolerance around 10 to 15°F at the lower edge. It grows outdoors in frost-free regions including Florida, California, Texas, Arizona, Hawaii, Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, and Nevada. Zone 8 areas of North Carolina, Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Oregon, Washington's milder coastal zones, and parts of Virginia and New Mexico support it with winter protection, while gardeners in cooler Midwest and Northeast regions grow it year-round indoors.
  • Q: Is Callisia Repens Sedum (Turtle Vine) safe for pets?
A: The sap causes skin and paw irritation in cats and dogs, so keep it on a high shelf or hanging hook out of reach.

Q: What window placement works best for bright indirect light?
A: Callisia Repens Sedum (Turtle Vine) does well near an east or west-facing window, or several feet back from a south-facing window where direct sun doesn't land on the leaves.

Q: How fast does Callisia Repens grow?
A: It grows at a moderate to fast pace during warm months, with regular feeding and good light keeping the trailing stems full.

Q: Can this plant propagate easily?
A: Callisia Repens roots quickly from stem cuttings placed in moist soil or water, with nodes along the stems establishing roots in days to weeks.

Q: Can Turtle Vine survive outdoors year-round?
A: Only in USDA Zones 9 through 11, which cover frost-free regions; elsewhere, bring it inside before temperatures drop below 50°F.

Q: Why isn't it flowering indoors?
A: Turtle Vine needs consistent nighttime temperature drops to trigger blooms; moving it away from heating and AC vents allows cooler nights that encourage flowering.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
