  •   Calathea 'Dottie' is a tropical foliage plant from the Marantaceae family, native to the rainforests of South America. It grows naturally on the shaded forest floor, where filtered light and high humidity shape its bold character. As a prayer plant, it raises and lowers its leaves with the rhythm of day and night.

The leaves are deep, almost black-green traced with vivid pink and rose stripes that follow the leaf margins with precision. It grows in an upright, clumping habit, reaching 18–24 inches tall, with large oval leaves that have burgundy-purple undersides. This dark leaf calathea offers striking visual drama.

It can produce small, inconspicuous blooms in ideal conditions, though the foliage remains the primary visual focus. Beyond ornamental appeal, it naturally humidifies the air around it and actively filters formaldehyde and other indoor toxins.

It grows well in kitchens and bathrooms where ambient moisture keeps humidity levels naturally high, and it grows well under office LEDs when natural light is limited. The compact, clumping form works in terrariums, on plant shelves, or in grouped tropical displays. It is sensitive to being moved, so choose a location with appropriate light and allow time to acclimate. It is pet safe, so it works well in households with cats or dogs.

  •   Calathea 'Dottie' grows well in medium to bright indirect light and tolerates low light, but it scorches in direct sun from south-facing windows.

Water it every 7–10 days, keeping the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged, and reduce frequency in winter.

Calathea 'Dottie' does best in a well-draining, peat-free mix of coco coir, perlite, and a small amount of compost.

It prefers temperatures between 65–85°F and must be kept away from AC vents, heaters, and cold drafts.

Calathea 'Dottie' is a moderate grower that benefits from balanced liquid fertilizer applied monthly during spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9–11, where temperatures rarely dip below 25–30°F. It is not frost tolerant. It grows outdoors through the warmer months in Florida, Hawaii, California, Texas, Arizona, Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, and Mississippi. Parts of Nevada, coastal Oregon, and southern portions of North Carolina also fall within these zones.
  • Q: Is Calathea 'Dottie' safe for pets?
A: It is completely non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it safe for pet-owning households.

Q: Why are the leaves on my plant turning yellow?
A: Yellow leaves on Calathea 'Dottie' are most commonly caused by overwatering, low humidity, or cold air from AC or heating vents. Check your watering schedule and increase humidity to help recovery.

Q: Does Calathea 'Dottie' need a specific window location?
A: Avoid south-facing windows where direct afternoon sun causes leaf scorch. East or west-facing windows with sheer curtains, or a few feet back from any bright window, work well.

Q: How do I propagate this plant?
A: Calathea 'Dottie' propagates by division during repotting in spring. Carefully separate the root clumps and pot each section into fresh, moist soil.

Q: Can Calathea 'Dottie' survive if I skip watering for a week or two?
A: The leaves will begin to wilt and curl when thirsty. You can leave it up to ten days without water.

Q: What does air purification mean for this plant?
A: Calathea 'Dottie' filters formaldehyde and other indoor toxins from the air while raising humidity levels in the immediate space around it.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
*** We pack carefully to protect each plant during transit, so larger orders may arrive in multiple packages.
