  •   Alocasia 'Scalprum', also called Samar Lance, is a rare tropical aroid native to the island of Samar in the Philippines, where it grows in humid, shaded forest understories. It belongs to the family Araceae and is one of the more sought-after collector aroids for its unusually narrow, lance-shaped foliage.

The leaves of 'Scalprum' are long, narrow, and lance-shaped with a thick, leathery texture and a dark green upper surface. Each leaf tapers to a fine point and sits on an upright petiole, giving the plant a structured, vertical growth habit. The midrib runs cleanly through the center of each blade, and the overall form is compact compared to larger Alocasia species.

Confirmed flower details for 'Scalprum' are limited, as it rarely blooms in indoor conditions. It does produce a spathe and spadix typical of aroids when conditions are right, but indoor specimens spend most of their energy on leaf production. It helps to know that the plant is sensitive to being moved, so once it settles into a spot where it pushes out new leaves, that location is worth keeping.

'Scalprum' is a rare collector plant, and finding one outside of specialty aroid growers or plant swaps is uncommon. Keep it on a high shelf or out of reach of pets and small children, as the sap causes skin and paw irritation, and the plant should not be nibbled or eaten by cats, dogs, or toddlers. It thrives near kitchen moisture and does well in any room where ambient humidity stays consistently high. A pebble tray or humidifier nearby helps it push out new growth steadily indoors.

  •   Alocasia 'Scalprum' grows well in bright indirect light and scorches in south-facing windows with direct afternoon sun.

Water it when the top inch of soil feels dry, roughly every 7 to 10 days, and reduce frequency in winter.

'Scalprum' does best in a well-draining, chunky aroid mix of perlite, bark, and potting soil to prevent root rot.

It prefers temperatures between 65°F and 85°F and suffers near air conditioning vents or heating units.

'Scalprum' grows at a slow to moderate pace and benefits from a balanced liquid fertilizer every four weeks during spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 10 to 12, where frost is minimal and temperatures rarely drop below 35°F. It grows outdoors year-round in Hawaii, southern Florida, and parts of coastal Southern California. It can move outside for summer in warmer states like Texas, Georgia, and Arizona, but needs to come back indoors before nighttime temperatures fall below 55°F.
  • Q: Is Alocasia 'Scalprum' safe to keep around pets?
A: Cats and dogs shouldn't be left to nibble or eat the plant, and the sap can cause skin and paw irritation on contact. Keep it on a high shelf or in a room pets don't access.

Q: How do I know when it needs water?
A: Alocasia 'Scalprum' wilts slightly and the petioles soften when the soil has been dry too long. Check the top inch of soil and water before the plant reaches that point.

Q: Does 'Scalprum' need a humidifier?
A: It does best with humidity above 60 percent. A humidifier, pebble tray with water, or placement near a kitchen or bathroom all help maintain that level.

Q: What happens if I overwater it?
A: 'Scalprum' is prone to root rot if the soil stays soggy. Yellowing lower leaves and a soft base are the first signs that water is sitting too long around the roots.

Q: Why does my Samar Lance keep dropping leaves after I moved it?
A: It is sensitive to being moved and will often drop a leaf or stall on new growth while it adjusts to the change in light and humidity. Give it two to four weeks in the new spot before making further changes.

Q: What kind of light works best for this plant indoors?
A: Samar Lance does well a few feet back from an east- or west-facing window. Leaves develop brown dry patches when exposed to direct afternoon sun through a south-facing window.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
