  •   Variegated Sempervivum is a variegated succulent in the Crassulaceae family, native to the mountain regions of Europe and western Asia. It combines visual appeal with genuine frost hardiness.

Cream, yellow, green, and pink tones swirl together across tightly packed rosettes that cluster and clump over time. The leaves are fleshy and pointed, often edged with fine cilia, creating a layered, sculptural form that looks just as good in a 2" pot as in a 4" arrangement. Sempervivum Variegated produces offsets freely, building into dense colonies.

Each rosette blooms once before finishing its life cycle, sending up a tall flower stalk with star-shaped blooms in summer. The mother rosette dies after flowering, but the surrounding offsets ensure the colony keeps expanding.

Sempervivum Variegated works in rock gardens, container arrangements, balcony displays, and windowsill collections. You can move it outside for summer and leave it there well into autumn, or keep it indoors where it tolerates dry heated air. It is pet friendly and safe for cats and dogs.

  •   Variegated Sempervivum grows well in bright indirect light, partial sun, or full sun, though intense south-facing windows may scorch the leaves.

Water it deeply every 10 to 14 days during the growing season, then reduce to once a month or less in winter.

Sempervivum Variegated does best in gritty, fast-draining succulent or cactus mix blended with extra perlite or coarse sand.

It prefers temperatures between 65–80°F and tolerates frost well below freezing.

Sempervivum Variegated is a slow to moderate grower that needs little fertilizer, benefiting from diluted balanced feed once in spring.

It is hardy in USDA zones 3 through 8, tolerating temperatures as low as -40°F. It grows outdoors year-round in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina. It also grows outdoors through winter in milder zones 7 and 8, including parts of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, Georgia, South Carolina, and Alabama.
  • Q: How often should I water Variegated Sempervivum?
A: Water deeply every 10 to 14 days during the growing season and cut back to once a month or less in winter. The soil should dry completely between waterings to prevent root rot.

Q: Is this plant safe for households with pets?
A: Variegated Sempervivum is non-toxic and safe for cats and dogs.

Q: What light conditions does Sempervivum Variegated prefer?
A: It grows best in bright indirect light to full sun on a sunny windowsill or outdoor spot. Rotate the pot regularly for even growth and protect from intense afternoon sun that can scorch the leaves.

Q: How hardy is Sempervivum Variegated in cold climates?
A: Sempervivum Variegated survives temperatures as low as -40°F and is rated for USDA zones 3 through 8, making it one of the hardiest options for cold-climate gardeners.

Q: How does Sempervivum Variegated spread?
A: It spreads naturally by producing offsets, called chicks, around the base of the mother rosette. Simply detach a chick once it has developed its own roots and pot it up in fresh gritty succulent mix.

Q: How rare is this plant compared to standard hen and chicks?
A: Sempervivum Variegated is genuinely rare as an alpine succulent for plant collectors. Its color-splashed foliage differs from common green varieties.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
