  •   Sempervivum 'Temby' is a frost-hardy hens and chicks succulent in the Crassulaceae family, native to the mountainous regions of Europe and western Asia. For centuries, sempervivums have survived harsh alpine conditions in rocky, well-drained soils, and this cultivar carries that same tough spirit into home gardens and containers everywhere.

Temby forms tight, multicolor rosettes that cluster and spread over time as the mother plant produces a steady ring of offsets around its base. The fleshy leaves shift in tone with the seasons and sun exposure, showing layered hues that deepen with cooler temperatures and brighter light. Its low, ground-hugging growth habit and rosette structure make it easily identifiable.

Like all sempervivums, each individual rosette blooms once in summer, then gives way to the surrounding offsets that carry the colony forward. The plant needs a cool nighttime temperature drop to trigger flowering. Once a rosette completes its bloom cycle, simply remove it and let the offsets fill the space.

Temby spreads steadily by offsets and works well in rock gardens, alpine troughs, container arrangements, and sunny windowsill displays. It tolerates balcony wind and rain, handles drafty spots with ease, and can move outside for summer or stay outdoors well into autumn. The plant is pet-safe around cats and dogs.

  •   Sempervivum 'Temby' grows well in partial to full sun, needing at least four to six hours of direct light daily for best color and compact growth.

Water it deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings, roughly every two to three weeks indoors.

Temby does best in a gritty, fast-draining succulent or cactus mix blended with extra perlite or coarse sand.

It handles temperatures from around -30°F at peak hardiness down through hot summers without stress.

Temby is a moderate grower that spreads steadily by offsets and needs only a light, balanced fertilizer once in spring if desired.

It is hardy in USDA zones 3 through 8, tolerating frost down to approximately -40°F in the coldest zones. It grows outdoors in Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Wyoming, Idaho, Colorado, Utah, Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Oregon, and Washington.
  • Q: Is Sempervivum 'Temby' safe around pets?
A: It is non-toxic and safe for cats and dogs.

Q: What window placement works best indoors?
A: Sempervivum 'Temby' does best in a bright south- or west-facing window with several hours of direct sun. Rotate the pot regularly so all sides of the rosette receive even light and remain compact.

Q: How do I propagate Temby?
A: Gently twist or snip the small offset rosettes from around the mother plant and set them on fresh, gritty soil. They root quickly on their own.

Q: Can it survive a trip without watering?
A: Temby can go up to ten days without water.

Q: How fast does Temby grow and how large does it get?
A: Individual rosettes typically reach a few inches across, while the colony spreads gradually over time by producing offsets to form a clustering mat.

Q: Why are leaves turning yellow?
A: Yellow leaves are most often a sign of overwatering or waterlogged soil. Temby needs the soil to dry completely between waterings and requires excellent drainage in the pot or ground.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
