  •   Sempervivum tectorum 'Sunset' is a cold hardy succulent from the Crassulaceae family, native to the mountain ranges of Europe from the Alps to the Carpathians. This houseleek evolved in rocky, exposed terrain with minimal soil and extreme temperature swings, making it ideal for beginners.

'Sunset' forms tight, symmetrical rosettes with fleshy, pointed leaves that shift from green to amber, coral, and burgundy tones, deepening under full sun exposure. As a clustering grower, it spreads by producing small offset rosettes called chicks that radiate outward from the mother plant in a carpet-like mat.

When given the temperature drops needed to trigger blooming, 'Sunset' sends up a sturdy, upright flower stalk topped with star-shaped blooms in soft pink to rosy-red hues during summer. The blooming rosette flowers only once in its lifetime, but the surrounding offsets continue the colony without interruption. The plant does produce pollen and light allergens during bloom season.

'Sunset' tolerates drought, wind, and rain in rock gardens, alpine troughs, balcony containers, and green roofs well into autumn. Move it outside in summer to soak up full sun before returning indoors. It survives dry heated indoor air and can go up to ten days without water. Pet friendly and edible with a long history of traditional medicinal use, 'Sunset' grows solo in a terracotta pot or massed as a colorful ground cover.

  •   Sempervivum tectorum 'Sunset' grows in partial to full sun with at least four to six hours of direct light daily for best color.

Water it deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings, roughly every 10 to 14 days indoors.

'Sunset' does best in a fast-draining cactus or succulent mix blended with coarse perlite or grit.

It handles temperatures from around 30°F at its coldest to well above 80°F in summer without stress.

'Sunset' is a slow to moderate grower that rarely needs fertilizer, though a light diluted feed in spring is welcome.

It is hardy in USDA zones 3 through 8, tolerating frost well below 0°F. It grows outdoors year-round in Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, Colorado, and Idaho without winter protection. It performs equally well in Oregon, Washington, Missouri, Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Tennessee, North Carolina, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Utah.
  • Q: Is Sempervivum tectorum 'Sunset' pet friendly?
A: It is non-toxic and safe for cats and dogs.

Q: Does overwatering cause root rot?
A: Soggy soil is the main problem with Sempervivum tectorum 'Sunset'. Always wait for the soil to dry completely between waterings to prevent rot.

Q: Can 'Sunset' handle balcony conditions?
A: It handles wind and rain on balconies without trouble and can stay outdoors well into autumn.

Q: How big do individual rosettes get?
A: 'Sunset' typically reaches 3 to 4 inches in diameter per rosette, though the colony spreads outward over time to form a dense mat.

Q: How do you propagate 'Sunset' ?
A: Detach the small offset rosettes called chicks that grow naturally around the mother plant and replant them in well-draining succulent soil with their roots attached.

Q: Will leaf color change indoors?
A: 'Sunset' develops deeper red and purple tones in full sun outdoors, but leaves stay mostly green to yellow-green with partial sun or bright indoor light.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
