  •   Sempervivum Tectorum, also called Roof Houseleek, is a cold hardy succulent in the Crassulaceae family native to the mountainous regions of Europe. It grows naturally in rocky, alpine terrain and has become widely grown in cold hardy succulents for gardens and homes worldwide. This plant needs almost no maintenance and adapts to nearly any outdoor growing condition.

Tight, symmetrical rosettes form the structure of this plant, with fleshy, pointed leaves that shift from green to burgundy-red as temperatures drop or light intensifies. The leaves sit densely packed in geometric patterns, making each rosette visually distinct. Sempervivum Tectorum produces offsets around the base of the mother rosette, creating a spreading clump that widens steadily over time.

When grown outdoors through autumn and winter, it produces a dramatic bloom stalk that rises from the center of a mature rosette, triggering flowering after the plant experiences cool nighttime temperatures. The rosette that flowers completes its life cycle and dies back once blooming finishes, while the surrounding offsets continue growing.

Sempervivum Tectorum handles balcony wind, rain, and dry indoor air without trouble, making it one of the most adaptable succulents for any location. Plant it in a rock garden, on a sunny windowsill, in patio containers, or on a green roof. It is non-toxic to cats and dogs, an important consideration for households with pets.

  •   Sempervivum tectorum f/ Soldeu grows well in bright indirect light indoors but appreciates direct outdoor sun once gradually acclimated.

Water it every 10-14 days during the growing season, reducing to once monthly or less in winter.

Sempervivum Tectorum does best in gritty, fast-draining soil such as cactus soil blended with perlite or coarse sand.

It handles a wide temperature range from 65-80°F indoors and tolerates frost down to approximately -30°F.

Sempervivum Tectorum is a moderate grower requiring minimal feeding; a light balanced fertilizer once in spring is sufficient.

It is hardy in USDA zones 3-8, tolerating frost down to -40°F at the colder end of its range. It grows outdoors year-round across Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, and North Dakota. It also performs well in milder regions of California, Texas, Georgia, Alabama, and the Pacific Northwest.
  • Q: Is Sempervivum tectorum f/ Soldeu pet friendly?
A: It is non-toxic to cats and dogs and safe for any household with pets.

Q: What window direction works best for indoor growth?
A: Sempervivum tectorum f/ Soldeu grows well in bright indirect light from an east or west-facing window; south-facing sun can scorch leaves if the plant is not gradually acclimated first.

A: It produces offsets, called chicks, around the base of the mother rosette that can be gently separated and replanted to expand the colony.

Q: Will outdoor growth trigger blooming?
A: Sempervivum Tectorum flowers when exposed to cool nighttime temperatures in autumn or through winter, sending up a bloom stalk from the center of a mature rosette.

Q: Can Roof Houseleek survive in very cold climates?
A: It is rated for USDA zones 3-8 and tolerates temperatures as low as -40°F, making it suitable for the coldest US regions.

Q: How much water does it need during winter?
A: Roof Houseleek becomes dormant in cold weather and requires far less water than during the growing season; water once a month or less.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
