  •   Sempervivum 'Sea Foam' is a frost hardy hens and chicks succulent in the Crassulaceae family, native to the mountainous regions of Europe and western Asia. These alpines evolved to grow in rocky, sparse terrain where water is scarce and winters are brutal, and Sea Foam carries that legendary toughness into gardens and containers across cold climates. The species has been cultivated for centuries by growers for its rugged constitution and minimal care needs.

Sea Foam forms tight, symmetrical rosettes in soft lime green tones that give it the signature sea-foam quality plant lovers seek. The fleshy, pointed leaves are smooth-edged and pack closely together, creating a dense, geometric shape with an almost sculptural presence. As a clumping rosette succulent, it spreads steadily by producing offsets, or "chicks," that cluster around the mother plant and fill out over time.

Like all hens and chicks succulents, Sea Foam needs a distinct drop in nighttime temperature to trigger blooming, so outdoor gardeners will see flower stalks rise from mature rosettes in summer. Blooms appear in soft pink or rosy hues on tall, leafy stems, adding contrast to the cool green foliage. Note that it produces pollen, so allergy-sensitive gardeners may want to keep that in mind during bloom season.

Sea Foam works on balconies, in rock gardens, container arrangements, and outdoor borders, handling wind, rain, and drafty spots without faltering. Move it outside for summer and it can stay outdoors well into autumn. This pet-friendly succulent is safe for households with curious cats and dogs. You can leave it up to ten days without water.

  •   Sempervivum 'Sea Foam' grows well in partial to full sun, receiving at least four to six hours of direct light daily.

Water it deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings, roughly every 10-14 days.

Sea Foam grows well in gritty, fast-draining soil such as cactus and succulent mix blended with perlite or coarse sand.

It handles temperatures from around 0°F up to 90°F, showing impressive frost tolerance through cold winters.

Sea Foam is a moderate grower that needs very little fertilizer, perhaps one light feeding with diluted balanced fertilizer in spring.

It is hardy in USDA zones 3-8, tolerating winter temperatures as low as -40°F. It grows outdoors year-round across Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina. It also performs well in the cooler inland areas of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Utah.
  • Q: Is Sempervivum 'Sea Foam' safe for cats and dogs?
A: It is non-toxic and safe for households with pets.

Q: What happens if this plant sits in wet soil?
A: Sempervivum 'Sea Foam' dislikes soggy conditions and will rot if the soil stays damp; always let it dry completely between waterings.

Q: How much light does Sea Foam actually need?
A: In dim light, the rosettes stretch and lose their tight form, so consistent direct sun keeps the compact shape intact.

Q: Can you separate the chicks as they form?
A: Sea Foam naturally produces small offsets that cluster around the mother rosette, and you can gently separate them once they have a small root base.

Q: Will Sea Foam survive outdoor winters in a cold climate?
A: Sea Foam survives temperatures down to -40°F and stays outdoors through harsh winters without protection in USDA zones 3-8.

Q: What window direction works best for indoor growth?
A: A south or west-facing window is best; east-facing windows work if they receive direct morning sun, and Sea Foam will weaken in north-facing conditions.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
