  •   Sempervivum 'Red Wings' is a hardy succulent in the Crassulaceae family, also known as hens and chicks. Native to the mountain regions of Europe and parts of Asia, it evolved in rocky, alpine terrain where water is scarce and conditions are harsh. This cold hardy hens and chicks is tough and low-maintenance.

Red Wings forms tight, symmetrical rosettes with pointed, fleshy leaves that blend red and green tones. The leaf edges are lined with fine cilia, creating a feathery fringe along each blade. As a clustering grower, it spreads by producing offsets around the mother rosette, eventually forming a full, tapestry-like display.

Individual rosettes bloom once before the surrounding offsets take over, keeping the clump full and healthy. Star-shaped flowers appear on tall stalks in summer, and a drop in nighttime temperature can encourage blooming.

Red Wings is drought tolerant and handles balcony wind and rain without issue. It stays outdoors through autumn and winter in most regions and can move outside for summer to soak up full sun. The plant is pet friendly, safe for cats and dogs, and benefits from a light rotation now and then to encourage even, symmetrical growth across the rosette.

  •   Sempervivum 'Red Wings' grows well in full sun to partial sun, needing at least four to six hours of bright direct light daily.

Water it deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings, roughly every ten to fourteen days.

Red Wings does best in a gritty, fast-draining mix such as cactus soil blended with perlite or coarse sand.

It tolerates temperatures from around -30°F at its hardiest to warm summer highs without issue.

Red Wings is a slow to moderate grower that rarely needs fertilizer, though a diluted feed once in spring can support healthy offsets.

It is hardy in USDA zones 3 through 8, tolerating frost well below 0°F. It grows outdoors year-round in Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, Utah, Nevada, New Mexico, Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, Arkansas, and Oklahoma. It also grows well in coastal and transitional areas of California, Georgia, South Carolina, and Alabama.
  • Q: How much light does Sempervivum 'Red Wings' need?
A: Four to six hours of bright direct light daily. Brighter light deepens the red coloration in the rosette.

Q: Is it safe for households with pets?
A: Sempervivum 'Red Wings' is non-toxic to cats and dogs and safe for homes with curious animals.

Q: Can Red Wings survive a ten-day trip without water?
A: You can leave it up to ten days without water.

Q: How does the plant spread?
A: Red Wings naturally produces small offsets, called chicks, around the base of the mother rosette. Simply separate these and replant to expand your collection.

Q: How cold hardy is Red Wings?
A: It survives down to around -30°F and remains outdoors through autumn and winter in most parts of the United States.

Q: Can it be grown outdoors on a balcony?
A: Red Wings handles balcony wind and rain well and grows well in outdoor containers. Use a pot with excellent drainage and consider moving it under cover during prolonged heavy rain to prevent waterlogging.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
