  •   Sempervivum 'Pompeon' is a frost-hardy succulent from the Crassulaceae family, native to the mountainous regions of Europe and Asia Minor. It evolved in rocky terrain where poor soil, intense sun, and freezing winters are simply part of life, and it has been grown in gardens for generations as a true heirloom plant.

Pompeon forms tight, symmetrical rosettes in forest green tones with a compact structure that collectors and casual gardeners alike seek out. The fleshy leaves are plump and neatly layered, giving each rosette an almost geometric precision. As a clustering houseleek, it spreads steadily by producing offsets, or "chicks," around the central hen, creating a spreading carpet of rosettes over time.

Like all Sempervivums, Pompeon needs a period of cooler night temperatures to trigger its bloom cycle, so plants kept outdoors or given a seasonal chill are most likely to flower. It is a slow-growing plant, and its dense clustering habit means the display improves season after season as new offsets fill in around the parent rosettes.

Pompeon grows equally well in a garden border, a shallow dish, a windowbox, or a balcony container where it handles wind and rain with ease. It is non-toxic and safe for cats and dogs. You can leave it up to ten days without water during the growing season. This frost-hardy succulent can stay outdoors year-round in most temperate climates without winter protection.

  •   Sempervivum 'Pompeon' grows well in partial sun to full sun, needing at least four to six hours of direct light daily.

Water it every ten to fourteen days during the growing season, then reduce watering to once a month or less in winter.

Pompeon does best in fast-draining gritty mix, such as a cactus and succulent blend combined with perlite or coarse grit.

It handles temperatures from around -30°F up to about 90°F, making it frost-hardy.

Pompeon is a moderate grower that spreads steadily via offsets and rarely needs fertilizing beyond a light feeding in spring.

It is hardy in USDA zones 3 through 8, surviving frost well below 0°F. It grows outdoors year-round in Alaska, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Wyoming, Idaho, Colorado, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Oregon. It grows outdoors in the higher-altitude and cooler zones of Washington, Utah, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, Georgia, and South Carolina with minimal winter protection.
  • Q: Is Sempervivum 'Pompeon' safe for cats and dogs?
A: Yes, it is non-toxic and safe for both cats and dogs.

Q: What happens if I overwater it?
A: Sempervivum 'Pompeon' develops yellow leaves with overwatering or poorly draining soil, both leading to root rot. Pull back on watering and ensure the pot drains freely.

    Q: How does Pompeon spread?
A: It produces small offset rosettes called chicks around the base of the mother plant, which naturally fill in the space around the original rosette.

Q: Can I detach and replant the offsets?
A: Pompeon offsets root quickly when detached and replanted in gritty, well-draining soil.

Q: How large does Pompeon get?
A: Individual rosettes reach two to four inches across, but a mature colony can spread to cover a foot or more given adequate space.

Q: Does it need to stay indoors, or can it live outside year-round?
A: Pompeon survives temperatures as low as -30°F and can stay outdoors through autumn and winter in most temperate climates without any protection.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
