  •   Sempervivum 'Pacific Shadows' is a hardy hens and chicks succulent in the Crassulaceae family, native to the mountainous regions of Europe and western Asia. These cold hardy perennials naturally colonize rocky, well-drained slopes where most plants cannot survive, and the 'Pacific Shadows' cultivar has been selected over generations for its toughness and deep burgundy coloration.

'Pacific Shadows' forms tight, symmetrical rosettes in deep burgundy and shadowy purple tones that intensify in strong sunlight. The fleshy, pointed leaves cluster densely into a neat habit, with each mother rosette producing offsets that spread outward to create a dense, evergreen groundcover. Individual rosettes typically reach two to four inches across, staying compact and tidy in containers and garden spaces alike.

When mature rosettes flower, the bloom stalk rises dramatically from the center before the mother rosette gives way to its surrounding chicks, a monocarpic flowering pattern that renews the plant continuously. A nighttime temperature drop can trigger blooming, mimicking the natural cues from this succulent's mountain origins.

You can leave it up to ten days without water. Move it outside in summer; it handles wind and outdoor autumn conditions with ease. It is pet friendly and safe around cats and dogs. It works well in rock gardens, alpine troughs, container displays, and balcony arrangements, and can stay outdoors year-round in most of the United States.

  •   Sempervivum 'Pacific Shadows' grows well in full sun to partial sun, with at least four to six hours of direct light daily for the deepest color.

Water it deeply every two to three weeks in summer, reducing to once a month or less in winter when the soil dries completely between waterings.

'Pacific Shadows' does best in fast-draining soil such as a cactus and succulent mix combined with extra perlite or coarse grit.

It prefers temperatures from around 25°F to 90°F, with strong frost hardy performance in cold winters.

'Pacific Shadows' is a slow to moderate grower that rarely needs fertilizer, though a light diluted feed in spring can support offset production.

It is hardy in USDA zones 3 through 8, tolerating winter lows down to around -40°F. It grows outdoors year-round across the northern and midwestern states including Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Colorado, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina. It also performs well throughout Oregon, Washington, Utah, New Mexico, and the cooler inland areas of California.
  • Q: How often should I water Sempervivum 'Pacific Shadows'?
A: Every two to three weeks during the growing season, letting the soil dry out completely between waterings. In winter, water once a month or less.

    Q: Is it pet friendly?
A: Sempervivum 'Pacific Shadows' is non-toxic and safe for cats and dogs.

Q: How much light does 'Pacific Shadows' need?
A: Four to six hours of direct sunlight daily intensifies the burgundy and purple tones. It tolerates partial sun but color intensity decreases with less light.

Q: How big does it get?
A: Individual rosettes reach two to four inches across, with clusters expanding as offsets fill in around the mother plant. 'Pacific Shadows' stays compact in both containers and garden settings.

Q: How do I propagate 'Pacific Shadows'?
A: Remove the small offset chicks growing around the mother rosette and replant them in well-draining soil. They root quickly and establish themselves independently.

Q: Can it stay outside through winter?
A: 'Pacific Shadows' survives temperatures down to -40°F and is hardy outdoors year-round in USDA zones 3-8, though it appreciates protection from prolonged wet winter rain to prevent roots from sitting in soggy soil.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
