  •   Sempervivum 'Maria Laach' is a hardy succulent perennial in the Crassulaceae family, commonly known as hens and chicks. Native to the mountainous regions of Europe, it evolved in rocky alpine terrain where thin soils and harsh weather define survival. That rugged alpine heritage makes it exceptionally tough in cultivation.

Maria Laach forms tight, symmetrical rosettes with fleshy, pointed leaves in purple and green tones that deepen under direct sun. The clustering growth habit means the mother rosette steadily produces offsets, creating a carpet of rosettes over time. It spreads as a wide mat-forming plant that fills containers, rock gardens, and alpine troughs.

Like all hens and chicks, each individual rosette blooms once in summer, then naturally dies back while the surrounding offsets continue. Star-shaped flowers rise on tall stalks in pink to reddish tones and produce pollen, so allergy-sensitive households should take note.

You can leave it up to ten days without water. Move it outside in summer on balconies or in rock gardens; it handles wind and rain with ease and can stay outdoors through autumn and winter in cold climates. Maria Laach is non-toxic to cats and dogs. It survives temperatures as low as -30°F and tolerates dry heated air indoors.

  •   Sempervivum 'Maria Laach' grows well in full sun to partial sun, producing its deepest leaf color with at least four hours of direct light daily.

Water it deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings, roughly every ten to fourteen days.

Maria Laach does best in a fast-draining gritty mix, ideally a 50/50 blend of coarse sand or perlite with standard potting soil.

It tolerates a wide range from around 25°F up to 90°F, making it frost hardy for cold climates.

Maria Laach is a moderate to fast spreader that needs little to no fertilizer, perhaps one light feeding in spring if growth seems slow.

It is hardy in USDA Zones 4 through 9, tolerating winter temperatures as low as -30°F in the coldest zones. It grows outdoors across Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington. It also grows in warmer Zone 9 states such as California, Texas, Arizona, Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, and Nevada with afternoon shade during peak summer heat.
  • Q: How much light does Sempervivum 'Maria Laach' need to develop its best color?
A: Provide at least four hours of direct sun daily to bring out the deepest purple and green tones; less light produces muted green foliage.

Q: Is this plant safe for households with cats or dogs?
A: Sempervivum 'Maria Laach' is non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a safe choice for pet owners.

Q: Why does Maria Laach flower only once per rosette?
A: It is monocarpic, meaning each individual rosette completes its lifecycle with one bloom cycle, then dies back while the offsets take over.

Q: How fast does it spread in a container?
A: Maria Laach clusters offsets around the mother rosette at a moderate to fast pace, filling a space naturally over one to two seasons.

Q: Can Maria Laach survive being left unwatered for a trip?
A: Sempervivum 'Maria Laach' stores water in its fleshy leaves, making it well-suited to trips of two weeks or less with no watering before departure.

Q: What temperatures can it handle outdoors?
A: Maria Laach withstands temperatures as low as -30°F and tolerates heat up to around 90°F, surviving outdoors year-round in Zones 4 through 9.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
