  •   Sempervivum heuffelii 'Violet' is a rare, cold hardy succulent in the Crassulaceae family, native to the rocky mountain ranges of southeastern Europe. It evolved to survive poor soils, fierce winds, and extreme temperature swings, making it one of the toughest frost hardy plants available for outdoor growing.

Violet forms dense, symmetrical rosettes with purple and violet-toned leaves that deepen with sun exposure and cooler temperatures. The fleshy, pointed leaves pack tightly in a geometric pattern, creating a distinctive form that stands out among cold hardy succulents. Unlike many hens and chicks varieties, it offsets by splitting from the base rather than producing runners, keeping clusters neat and compact.

Violet may require a noticeable drop in nighttime temperatures to trigger its blooming cycle, a natural cue from its mountain origins. The year-round foliage color is striking enough to serve as the main display, and its drought tolerant nature keeps it looking exceptional throughout the seasons.

Move it outside for summer, and it handles balcony wind and rain without trouble. You can leave it up to ten days without water. Violet stays handsome through autumn and is frost tolerant enough to overwinter outdoors in most climates. It tolerates dry heated air indoors and is safe around cats and dogs.

  •   Sempervivum heuffelii 'Violet' grows well in partial to full sun, with the deepest purple color developing under several hours of direct sunlight daily.

Water it deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings, roughly every 10 to 14 days indoors.

Violet does best in a gritty, fast-draining mix such as cactus soil blended with perlite or coarse sand at a 1:1 ratio.

It handles temperatures well below freezing, tolerating down to around -30°F depending on conditions and soil drainage.

Violet is a slow to moderate grower and rarely needs fertilizer, though a light, diluted feed in spring encourages healthy clusters.

It is hardy in USDA Zones 3 to 8. It grows outdoors year-round across Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, and Alaska's milder coastal zones. Even in warmer states like Georgia, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and the cooler interior regions of California and Nevada, it succeeds with well-draining soil and a spot that gets some winter chill.
  • Q: Is Sempervivum heuffelii 'Violet' pet friendly?
A: It is non-toxic and safe for cats and dogs.

Q: What window direction gives the deepest color?
A: Sempervivum heuffelii 'Violet' deepens to its deepest purple in south or west-facing windows where it receives several hours of direct sunlight daily.

    Q: How does Violet propagate?
A: It propagates by division, splitting naturally at the base to form new rosette clusters rather than sending out runners.

Q: Can it survive without water during a vacation?
A: Violet survives a 10-day trip without watering because its leaves store water for extended periods.

    Q: Does Violet need fertilizer?
A: A light, diluted feed in spring can encourage healthy cluster development, though it rarely requires feeding.

Q: What happens if the soil stays wet too long?
A: Violet will develop root rot or stem rot, so always use fast-draining soil and let it dry completely between waterings.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
