  •   Sempervivum heuffelii 'Saffarina' is a rare alpine succulent belonging to the Crassulaceae family, native to the mountain regions of central and southeastern Europe. It grows in rocky, well-drained soil at high elevations across its native habitat. 'Saffarina' has earned its place among devoted hens and chicks enthusiasts worldwide for its resilience and appearance.

'Saffarina' forms tight, symmetrical rosettes with fleshy, pointed leaves that blend saffron, amber, and coppery tones. The leaf color intensifies under full sun exposure, deepening into jewel-like hues. As a clustering grower, it produces offsets that gradually form a dense, sculptural mat of overlapping rosettes. Individual rosettes typically reach two to four inches in diameter.

It can survive up to ten days without water. It handles the warm, dry conditions created by indoor heating without stress, and balcony wind and occasional rain cause it no trouble. Unlike many succulents that decline in dry indoor air, 'Saffarina' grows well in those conditions.

'Saffarina' is non-toxic and safe around cats and dogs. Move it outside in summer to a sunny balcony or garden bed, where it continues to perform well. It can remain outdoors through autumn and even into winter in most temperate climates. Separate offsets to propagate new plants; allow the cut end to callous for a day before potting into well-draining soil.

  •   Sempervivum heuffelii 'Saffarina' grows well in partial to full sun, receiving at least four to six hours of direct sun daily.

Water it every ten to fourteen days in summer, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings.

'Saffarina' does best in gritty, well-draining soil such as cactus mix blended with perlite or coarse sand.

It handles temperatures from around -20°F up to 90°F without stress, tolerating both frost and heat.

'Saffarina' grows at a moderate pace and needs fertilizer only once in spring using a diluted balanced formula.

It is hardy in USDA zones 3 through 8, tolerating frost down to approximately -40°F. It grows outdoors year-round in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and North Carolina. It also performs well in the milder winters of Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Utah, and northern California.
  • Q: Is Sempervivum heuffelii 'Saffarina' safe for homes with cats and dogs?
A: It is non-toxic and safe for both cats and dogs.

Q: What window direction works best for this plant indoors?
A: Sempervivum heuffelii 'Saffarina' needs a south or west-facing window with direct sun; this keeps the colors vibrant and prevents the rosettes from stretching.

Q: How do you propagate 'Saffarina'?
A: Separate the offsets that form around the base of the mother rosette, let the cut end callous for a day, then pot into well-draining soil.

Q: Can it tolerate being left unwatered for extended periods?
A: 'Saffarina' can go up to ten days without water during the dormant season, though regular watering during the growing season maintains stronger growth.

Q: What happens if 'Saffarina' receives too much shade?
A: The rosettes become pale and elongated as they stretch toward light, and the saffron and copper tones fade.

Q: In which US states can it grow outdoors year-round?
A: 'Saffarina' grows outdoors year-round in USDA zones 3 to 8, including Montana, Minnesota, New York, and throughout most of the northern and central United States, as well as in parts of the Pacific Northwest and northern California.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
