  •   Sempervivum heuffelii 'Irene' is a cold hardy succulent in the Crassulaceae family, native to the mountainous regions of southeastern Europe. It evolved in rocky, exposed terrain where winters are brutal and water is scarce, making it a frost hardy alpine succulent built to survive neglect and extreme temperature swings.

Irene forms tight, symmetrical rosettes in burgundy and deep plum tones, often edged with subtle green that intensifies in cooler temperatures. The fleshy, pointed leaves are smooth and boldly colored, and as a clumping grower, it steadily multiplies into dense mats of burgundy rosette clusters that remain eye-catching year-round.

Flowering details for Irene are not confirmed, but the plant earns its place on color alone. Its burgundy tones deepen through the seasons, and as a drought tolerant succulent, it produces fresh offsets around the base of the rosettes.

Irene is an ideal alpine succulent for rock gardens, containers, troughs, and alpine beds. Move it outside in summer on a balcony where it handles wind and rain with ease, though a light cover during prolonged downpours helps keep the rosettes pristine. This cat friendly and dog friendly succulent can survive a 10-day trip without water.

  •   Sempervivum heuffelii 'Irene' grows well in full sun to partial sun, with at least four to six hours of direct sun daily for optimal color intensity.

Water it deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings, roughly every two to three weeks.

Irene does best in a fast-draining gritty mix, such as cactus and succulent soil blended with coarse perlite or pumice at a 1:1 ratio.

It handles temperatures from approximately 20°F up to 90°F, making it a frost tolerant succulent for most climates.

Irene grows at a moderate pace and needs fertilizer only once in spring, using a diluted balanced feed at half strength.

It is hardy in USDA zones 4 through 9, tolerating frost down to around 20°F with excellent drainage. It grows outdoors year-round in Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. It also grows well in warmer zones including Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Nevada, California, and Arizona when given good sun and sharp drainage.
  • Q: Is Sempervivum heuffelii 'Irene' safe for cats and dogs?
A: It is non-toxic and considered safe around pets, making it a good choice for homes with curious animals.

Q: What happens if the soil stays wet too long?
A: Sempervivum heuffelii 'Irene' will rot quickly in soggy conditions; the soil must dry out completely between waterings to prevent crown rot and root damage.

Q: Can Irene survive outdoors through winter?
A: It tolerates frost down to 20°F and grows outdoors year-round in USDA zones 4 through 9 with proper drainage.

    Q: How does propagation work?
A: Irene produces small offsets or chicks around the base of the mother rosette; simply detach a well-rooted offset and pot it up in gritty, well-draining soil.

Q: What window direction works best for Irene?
A: A south or west-facing window provides the most direct sun for best color; east or north windows may result in lighter, less intense burgundy tones.

Q: Does this plant need frequent feeding?
A: Irene requires only one spring application of diluted balanced fertilizer at half strength; more frequent feeding is unnecessary and can damage the plant.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
