  •   Sempervivum heuffelii 'Beatrice' is a cold hardy alpine succulent in the Crassulaceae family, native to the mountain ranges of southeastern Europe. It evolved in rocky, exposed terrain where harsh winters and dry summers are the norm, making it exceptionally tough in cultivation. This is a rare find among rosette succulents.

Beatrice forms tight rosettes in forest green with contrasting color shifts across the seasons. The leaves are fleshy, pointed, and neatly layered, creating a sculptural appearance suited to containers, rock gardens, or sunny windowsills. Its clustering growth habit means one plant gradually becomes a living tapestry of offsets over time.

Star-shaped flowers emerge on upright stalks typically in summer as a mature rosette reaches peak maturity. A slight drop in nighttime temperature can encourage blooming, so plants moved outside for the warmer months often flower most reliably. After flowering, that individual rosette dies back naturally, but the surrounding offsets continue growing.

Beatrice can stay outdoors well into autumn thanks to its outstanding frost tolerance and handles drafty spots and dry heated indoor air without issue. You can leave it up to ten days without water. It propagates easily by separating the offsets that naturally cluster around the mother rosette and potting them into well-draining soil. This drought tolerant succulent suits busy households and dedicated collectors alike.

  •   Sempervivum heuffelii 'Beatrice' grows well in bright indirect light indoors and handles direct sun or lower-light conditions outdoors.

Water it deeply but infrequently, roughly every 10-14 days indoors, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings.

Beatrice does best in a gritty, well-draining mix such as cactus soil blended with coarse perlite or pumice at a 50/50 ratio.

It tolerates temperatures as low as -30°F, making it exceptionally frost tolerant for outdoor growing.

Beatrice grows at a steady pace and needs only a light balanced fertilizer once in spring to stay healthy all season.

It is hardy in USDA Zones 3-8, surviving frost well below 0°F. It grows outdoors year-round in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Colorado, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina. Even gardeners in the warmer edges of Zone 8 in Washington, Oregon, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Texas, and Louisiana can grow it with good drainage and afternoon shade during peak summer heat.
  • Q: Is Sempervivum heuffelii 'Beatrice' toxic to pets?
A: No. It is non-toxic and safe for cats and dogs.

Q: What causes yellowing leaves on my plant?
A: Sempervivum heuffelii 'Beatrice' develops yellow or discolored leaves most commonly from overwatering or waterlogged soil. Always ensure excellent drainage and let the mix dry fully between waterings.

Q: How do I propagate Beatrice?
A: Separate the offsets that naturally cluster around the mother rosette and pot them into well-draining soil. They root quickly and mature into new rosettes.

Q: Does my plant need protection from rain?
A: Beatrice benefits from cover during prolonged heavy rain, since sitting water in the rosette can cause rot, especially in cooler temperatures.

Q: Can Beatrice survive an extended trip without watering?
A: Leave it unwatered for up to ten days indoors or longer if the soil is thoroughly dry before you depart.

Q: Which window direction works best for indoor growth?
A: Beatrice performs well in any bright window, though south or west-facing placement provides the strongest light. It can also develop deeper color tones in direct indoor sun.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
