    •   Sempervivum globiferum ssp. allionii is an alpine succulent in the Crassulaceae family, native to the rocky mountain slopes of the European Alps and Apennines. This frost hardy succulent evolved to handle extreme cold, thin soils, and intense sun, earning its reputation as a tough houseleek that grows well where many plants struggle.

        The plant forms tight, symmetrical rosettes in lime green, often flushing with rosy or bronze tones at the leaf tips when grown in full sun. Its fleshy leaves are plump, slightly cupped, and edged with fine hairs. Sempervivum Allionii earns the common name rolling hens and chicks for its most distinctive trait: it produces small, spherical offsets that detach and literally roll away to root nearby.

        The mother rosette blooms once, sending up a sturdy stem topped with pale yellow to cream-colored star-shaped flowers in summer. After flowering, it gives way to its many offsets, which continue the colony without interruption, keeping the planting full year after year.

        Rock gardens, alpine troughs, green roofs, and sunny patio containers all suit this alpine succulent well. It handles dry heated indoor air and tolerates drafty spots without trouble. You can leave it up to ten days without water. Move it outside in summer and bring it back indoors in autumn. Individual rosettes stay 1 to 2 inches across, and the clustering habit means a single plant spreads into a dense mat over time. It is pet friendly and safe for cats and dogs.
