  •   Sempervivum Ciliosum is an alpine succulent in the Crassulaceae family, native to the rocky mountain slopes of Bulgaria and Greece. This frost hardy drought tolerant species has adapted to grow in harsh conditions. It grows indoors or outdoors as a cold hardy succulent.

The plant forms tight, symmetrical rosettes densely covered in fine white cilia, those tiny hair-like fringe edges that catch the light and give each leaf a soft, silvery glow. Gray-green leaves cluster and spread over time, creating a living tapestry of texture. The ciliated houseleek has distinctive hairy margins that set it apart from most other Sempervivum varieties.

It produces star-shaped blooms on tall upright stems in summer, with soft yellow to pale greenish-yellow tones. Like all sempervivums, individual rosettes bloom once and then die back, but surrounding offsets carry on, keeping the colony thriving and full.

It spreads widely, filling 4-inch containers, rock gardens, and alpine troughs with ease. Move it outside in summer and keep it outdoors into autumn; it handles balcony wind and rain without flinching. Sempervivum Ciliosum tolerates dry heated air indoors and can stay unwatered for ten days or longer. The plant is non-toxic, so cats and dogs can investigate without risk.

  •   Sempervivum Ciliosum grows well in partial sun to full sun, needing four to six hours of direct light daily.

Water it deeply every two to three weeks in summer, reducing to once a month or less in winter.

Sempervivum Ciliosum grows well in a fast-draining mix of cactus soil blended with coarse perlite or grit at roughly 50/50.

It prefers temperatures from around 10°F up to 90°F, handling hard frost with ease.

Sempervivum Ciliosum is a moderate grower that rarely needs fertilizer, though a light balanced feed in spring can boost clustering.

It is hardy in USDA zones 4 through 9, tolerating frost down to roughly -30°F at the colder end of that range. It grows outdoors year-round in New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, New Mexico, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. It grows through winters with no protection needed in Tennessee, North Carolina, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Kentucky, and Nevada.
  • Q: Is Sempervivum Ciliosum pet friendly?
A: It is non-toxic to cats and dogs and can be displayed anywhere in your home.

Q: How do I know when it needs water?
A: Sempervivum Ciliosum wilts slightly when completely dry. Let the soil dry out fully between waterings, then water deeply.

Q: How fast does Sempervivum Ciliosum spread?
A: It steadily produces offsets and clusters outward over seasons, filling a 4-inch pot or rock garden pocket within one to two growing seasons with good sun and well-draining soil.

Q: Can it survive without watering during travel?
A: Sempervivum Ciliosum tolerates ten days or longer without water, making it suited for brief absences.

Q: What window direction works best for Sempervivum Ciliosum indoors?
A: A south or west-facing window provides the strongest direct light. Rotate it regularly so all sides develop evenly.

Q: Will it survive hard freezes outdoors?
A: Sempervivum Ciliosum tolerates temperatures well below freezing and stays outdoors through autumn and winter in zones 4 to 9; just provide cover from prolonged heavy rain, which causes rot more than cold ever will.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
