  •   Sempervivum 'Chrysanthemum' is a cold hardy succulent from the Crassulaceae family, native to the rocky alpine terrain of Europe and Asia Minor. It is one of the toughest, most drought tolerant plants you can grow, evolved to grow well where frost, poor soil, and extended dry periods are the norm.

It forms tight, symmetrical rosettes that cluster and spread over time in the classic hens and chicks fashion. The fleshy, pointed leaves are arranged in layered, flower-like patterns that inspired the cultivar name. Foliage shifts from green to red or bronze at the edges, creating a two-toned rosette that looks sculptural in containers and garden beds.

Like all sempervivums, it blooms once per mature rosette, typically in summer, with star-shaped flowers on an upright stalk. The rosette that flowers completes its life cycle afterward, but the surrounding offsets continue to grow and fill in, so the plant always looks full. A slight drop in night temperature can encourage this natural blooming cycle.

Sempervivum 'Chrysanthemum' excels in rock gardens, alpine troughs, wall crevices, and container arrangements with excellent drainage. It handles balcony wind with ease, though it appreciates some cover from heavy rain to prevent waterlogged rosettes. Individual rosettes reach 2 to 4 inches across and gradually spread into a wider mat over time. It is non-toxic and safe around cats and dogs.

  •   Sempervivum 'Chrysanthemum' grows well in partial sun to full sun and benefits from rotating for even, symmetrical rosette growth.

Water it deeply but infrequently, allowing soil to dry completely between waterings, roughly every 10 to 14 days indoors.

Chrysanthemum grows well in fast-draining soil combining coarse sand, perlite, and gritty succulent mix to prevent root rot.

It handles temperatures from 90°F down to -30°F and tolerates frost with ease.

Chrysanthemum grows at a moderate pace and rarely needs fertilizer, though a light spring feed is optional.

It is hardy in USDA zones 3 through 8, tolerating frost to approximately -40°F in the coldest zones. It grows outdoors year-round in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Idaho, Utah, Oregon, and Washington.
  • Q: Is Sempervivum 'Chrysanthemum' safe for cats and dogs?
A: It is non-toxic and poses no risk to pets.

Q: What happens if the soil stays wet?
A: Sempervivum 'Chrysanthemum' roots rot quickly in wet conditions and requires soil that dries out completely between waterings.

    Q: How does Chrysanthemum spread?
A: It naturally produces offsets, or chicks, around the mother rosette that can be gently separated and replanted.

Q: Will the plant survive outdoor winters?
A: Chrysanthemum tolerates freezing temperatures with no special protection needed across USDA zones 3 through 8.

Q: How big does Chrysanthemum get?
A: Individual rosettes reach 2 to 4 inches across and gradually cluster into larger mats over several seasons.

Q: Can it be grown in containers?
A: Yes. Use a pot with drainage holes and a gritty succulent soil mix to keep roots from staying wet.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
