  •   Sempervivum 'Brownie' is a hardy succulent in the Crassulaceae family, commonly called hens and chicks. Native to the mountains of Europe and western Asia, it evolved in rocky, exposed terrain where drought and freezing cold are constants. This ancestry makes Brownie one of the toughest, most adaptable succulents you can grow.

Brownie forms tight, symmetrical rosettes in chocolate-brown tones with hints of bronze and green that deepen in full sun. The leaves are fleshy, pointed, and layered in a geometric pattern that stands out in any arrangement. It steadily produces offsets around the mother rosette, spreading into full clumps over time as a natural clustering succulent.

Brownie produces small pink or red flowers on tall stalks during late spring and early summer. The mother rosette dies after flowering, but the surrounding chick offsets continue the colony. It tolerates dry air indoors and can survive up to ten days without water.

Brownie handles balcony wind and rain without trouble and stays outdoors through autumn in most climates. Separate the small chick offsets from the mother rosette to propagate, replanting them in well-draining succulent soil where they root quickly. It is pet-friendly, so households with cats or dogs can display it freely. Start a single plant indoors or add a mature specimen to a rock garden or shallow trough to fill space.

  •   Sempervivum 'Brownie' grows well in bright indirect light but appreciates direct morning sun for the deepest color.

Water it every 7 to 14 days during spring and summer, backing off to once a month or less in winter.

Brownie does best in gritty, well-draining succulent or cactus soil mix to prevent root rot.

It prefers temperatures between 65 and 80°F but is frost-hardy well below freezing.

Brownie is a moderate, steady clusterer that needs no regular fertilizer to grow well.

It is hardy in USDA zones 3 through 8, tolerating frost down to around negative 40°F at the hardiest end of that range. It grows outdoors in Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Wyoming, Idaho, Colorado, Utah, Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Oregon, Washington, and much of California. It overwinters outdoors without protection in most years across these states.
  • Q: Is Sempervivum 'Brownie' pet-friendly?
A: It is safe for cats and dogs and can be displayed freely in homes with curious pets.

Q: How do I propagate this plant?
A: Sempervivum 'Brownie' propagates easily by separating the small chick offsets from the mother rosette and replanting them in well-draining succulent soil, where they root within days.

Q: Why are the leaves on Brownie turning yellow?
A: Yellow leaves are most often caused by overwatering or soil that holds too much moisture; let the soil dry out fully between waterings and ensure the pot drains freely.

Q: Can this plant grow outdoors on a balcony?
A: Brownie tolerates balcony wind and rain well and can stay outdoors through autumn in most climates.

Q: Does Brownie need to be rotated?
A: Rotating it every few weeks encourages even, balanced rosette growth when grown indoors in a bright spot.

Q: How long can I leave this plant without watering during a trip?
A: It can go up to ten days without water.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
