  •   Sempervivum 'Boule de Neige' is a frost hardy succulent from the Crassulaceae family, native to the alpine regions of Europe including the Alps and Carpathians. This mountain native evolved to survive rocky terrain with minimal soil and extreme temperature swings, making it exceptionally cold hardy and drought tolerant across North America.

It forms tight, symmetrical rosettes with fleshy, pointed leaves in soft green tones that blush with reddish or bronze hues depending on sun exposure. The clustering, hens-and-chicks growth habit means the mother rosette steadily produces offsets, creating a spreading mat of nested rosettes over time. Its compact, rounded shape gives it a snowball-like appearance, and the crisp rosette structure stands out in any garden or container arrangement.

When mature rosettes flower, blooms rise on upright stalks before that particular rosette completes its life cycle, allowing surrounding offsets to carry on the plant. A nighttime temperature drop can trigger its blooming cycle, a natural cue this mountain native relies on. The plant is non-toxic and safe for cats and dogs.

It handles balcony wind and rain without issue and grows well in rock gardens, alpine troughs, and container displays. You can leave it up to ten days without water. Move it outside in summer for extra sun exposure, and propagation is simple: detach offsets from the mother rosette and set them on fresh, well-draining soil where they root within a few weeks.

  •   Sempervivum 'Boule de Neige' grows well in partial to full sun, receiving at least four to six hours of direct light daily.

Water it deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings, roughly every two to three weeks indoors.

'Boule de Neige' does best in a fast-draining succulent or cactus mix blended with extra perlite or coarse grit to prevent root rot.

It tolerates a wide range from around 25°F up to 90°F, with impressive frost hardiness for a rosette succulent.

'Boule de Neige' is a moderate, steady grower that rarely needs fertilizer, though a light, diluted balanced feed once in spring can support offset production.

It is hardy in USDA zones 4 through 9, tolerating temperatures down to around -30°F at the colder end of that range. It grows outdoors across Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico. It also performs well through most of the year in warmer stretches of Nevada, Texas, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, and California.
  • Q: Is Sempervivum 'Boule de Neige' pet friendly?
A: It is non-toxic and safe for cats and dogs.

Q: How often should I water during the active growing season versus winter?
A: Sempervivum 'Boule de Neige' needs water every two to three weeks indoors during growing season but can go once a month or longer in winter when it barely grows.

Q: Can 'Boule de Neige' survive frost outdoors?
A: It handles temperatures well below freezing and stays outdoors through autumn and winter in zones 4 to 9.

Q: What happens if I water it too much?
A: 'Boule de Neige' is far more tolerant of drought than overwatering; excess moisture can lead to root rot in the dense rosettes.

Q: How fast does 'Boule de Neige' spread?
A: It produces offsets at a moderate pace, clustering around the mother rosette to fill a container or rock garden over a season or two.

Q: How do I propagate this succulent?
A: Gently detach offsets from the mother rosette and set them on fresh, well-draining soil where they root within a few weeks without any special tools or rooting hormone.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
