  •   Sempervivum atlanticum is a rosette-forming succulent in the Crassulaceae family, native to the Atlas Mountains of Morocco and northern Africa. This alpine houseleek grows in rocky, high-elevation terrain and brings cold-hardy, drought-tolerant character to any collection or garden.

The plant forms tight, symmetrical rosettes with fleshy, pointed leaves that shift from soft green to reddish or purplish tones under bright light. It spreads by producing offsets around the mother rosette, creating dense clusters with an upright growth habit. The leaves have a textured, geometric quality that builds visual impact over time as the colony expands.

Sempervivum atlanticum produces star-shaped flowers on tall upright stalks in pink to reddish-pink shades during summer. The rosette that flowers will die after blooming, but surrounding offsets continue growing undisturbed, so the plant never stops expanding its display.

Rock gardens, alpine troughs, balcony containers, and sunny windowsills are all suitable homes for this drought-tolerant alpine succulent. It handles balcony wind and outdoor autumn weather without trouble. Move it outside in summer if growing indoors. Sempervivum atlanticum is species-true to its wild origin and genuinely hardy. It is also non-toxic to cats and dogs.

  •   Sempervivum atlanticum grows well in bright indirect light but tolerates direct sun outdoors, though intense south-facing indoor windows may scorch the leaves.

Water it thoroughly every 10 to 14 days during the growing season, reducing to once a month or less in winter.

Sempervivum atlanticum does best in gritty, fast-draining soil such as cactus mix combined with 30 to 50 percent perlite or coarse grit.

It handles temperatures from around 10°F up to 90°F, making it frost hardy through cold winters.

Sempervivum atlanticum is a moderately fast spreader that clusters steadily through the growing season; no regular fertilizer is needed, though light balanced feed in spring supports healthy offsets.

It is hardy in USDA zones 5 through 9 and tolerates frost down to approximately -20°F. It grows outdoors year-round across Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Massachusetts. It also performs well in Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico, as well as Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Kentucky, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine, covering nearly every region from the northern plains to the mid-Atlantic and Pacific Northwest.
  • Q: Is Sempervivum atlanticum pet friendly?
A: Non-toxic and safe for cats and dogs.

Q: What window location works best indoors?
A: Sempervivum atlanticum benefits from a spot near a sunny window where it receives bright indirect light; rotate it regularly for even growth on all sides.

Q: How does Sempervivum atlanticum propagate?
A: Separate the small offset rosettes from around the base of the mother plant and pot them in well-draining gritty soil to root quickly.

Q: How cold can it tolerate?
A: Sempervivum atlanticum survives temperatures down to around -20°F and stays outdoors through autumn and winter without protection in most temperate climates.

Q: Why are leaves on Sempervivum atlanticum turning yellow?
A: Check soil moisture by pressing your finger an inch into the soil; if it feels wet or soggy, reduce watering frequency and verify the pot has drainage holes.

Q: How quickly does it spread?
A: Sempervivum atlanticum clusters steadily through the growing season, with a single rosette forming a wide colony within a couple of seasons in good light and well-draining soil.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
