  •   Sempervivum arachnoideum ssp. tomentosum, also called cobweb houseleek, is a hardy succulent in the Crassulaceae family native to the mountain ranges of Europe, including the Alps and Apennines. It grows naturally on rocky, well-drained slopes at high elevations and is widely available to collectors and beginners alike.

The dense web of fine white hairs stretched across its rosettes resembles a spider's web. Fleshy, pointed leaves form tight, upright rosettes in shades of green, often blushing red or bronze at the tips. It spreads by producing offsets around the mother rosette, gradually filling containers and rock gardens with clusters over time.

Sempervivum Tomentosum produces star-shaped pink to reddish flowers on tall, upright stalks in summer. Each rosette flowers once, then dies back, but surrounding offsets continue growing, keeping the colony full and growing. A drop in nighttime temperatures encourages it to set buds, so moving it outside in cooler months promotes a summer flower display.

Sempervivum Tomentosum handles balcony wind and rain with ease and can move outside for summer without any trouble. It is drought-tolerant and does not mind dry air, growing well in conditions that challenge other plants. The plant is non-toxic to cats and dogs. You can leave it up to ten days without water.

  •   Sempervivum arachnoideum ssp. tomentosum grows well in bright indirect light but tolerates lower light and direct sun, though south-facing windows may cause leaf scorch.

Water it deeply every 10-14 days during the growing season, reducing to once a month or less in winter.

Sempervivum Tomentosum does best in a gritty, fast-draining succulent mix blended with perlite or coarse sand.

It prefers temperatures from -30°F to around 80°F, handling hard frost with ease.

Sempervivum Tomentosum is a slow to moderate grower that needs little to no fertilizer, perhaps a light feed once in spring.

It is hardy in USDA zones 5 through 9, tolerating frost down to around -20°F in the lower end of that range. It grows outdoors year-round across Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and much of Texas and California. It performs well in the cooler microclimates and higher elevations of Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, and Nevada.
  • Q: Is Sempervivum arachnoideum ssp. tomentosum pet-friendly?
A: It is non-toxic and safe for cats and dogs.

Q: How often should I water during the growing season?
A: Sempervivum arachnoideum ssp. tomentosum needs deep watering, but let the soil dry completely between waterings; check the soil with your finger before watering, as it is highly drought-tolerant and overwatering causes root rot more readily than underwatering.

Q: Can Sempervivum Tomentosum stay outside in winter?
A: Yes, it survives hard frosts down to around -20°F in USDA zones 5-9.

Q: What light conditions work best indoors?
A: Sempervivum Tomentosum grows in bright indirect light; direct afternoon sun in south-facing windows can cause the leaf edges to bleach or brown, so an east or west-facing window is often ideal.

Q: How does Sempervivum Tomentosum propagate?
A: It naturally produces small offsets around the mother rosette that you can gently separate and replant.

Q: How large do individual rosettes get?
A: Sempervivum Tomentosum rosettes typically reach 1-3 inches in diameter, spreading outward as offsets cluster around them over time.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
