  •   Opuntia microdasys var. pallida 'Bunny Ears', also called Bunny Ears, is a small, low-growing cactus native to Mexico. Its distinctive flattened pads resemble rabbit ears, earning it the playful common name.

The pads are covered in tiny, hair-like glochids that give them a soft appearance, though these spines can cause irritation if touched. Each pad grows in pairs, adding to the bunny-ear illusion, and the plant gradually forms a dense, spreading clump. The bright green color may take on yellowish tones in full sunlight.

In late winter to early spring, 'Bunny Ears' may produce small, yellow flowers along the edges of the pads. Blooms are more likely if the plant experiences cooler nighttime temperatures in autumn. The flowers give way to purple or red fruits, though fruiting is uncommon indoors.

Move it outside for summer, but provide cover from rain to prevent rot. It grows well in dry, heated indoor air and shows wilting when the soil is dry. Keep it on a high shelf to prevent nibbling by curious pets or small children.

  •   Opuntia microdasys var. pallida 'Bunny Ears' grows well in direct sun or bright indirect light, rotating occasionally for even growth.

Water it every 10-14 days during the growing season, allowing the soil to dry completely between sessions.

'Bunny Ears' does best in a well-draining cactus or succulent mix with added sand or perlite.

It prefers temperatures between 70-80°F during the day and a drop to 50-60°F at night to encourage flowering.

'Bunny Ears' grows slowly and benefits from a specialized cactus fertilizer applied sparingly in spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9-11. It grows outdoors in Florida, Texas, Arizona, and southern California, tolerating brief dips to 20°F with protection.
  • Q: How often should I water Opuntia microdasys var. pallida 'Bunny Ears'?
A: Water sparingly every 10-14 days when the top inch of soil is dry, reducing frequency in winter.

Q: Can this plant survive in low light?
A: Opuntia microdasys var. pallida 'Bunny Ears' grows under office LEDs but grows well best with direct or bright indirect light.

Q: Is 'Bunny Ears' safe around pets?
A: The glochids and sap can irritate skin and paws, so it's best kept out of reach.

    Q: Will it bloom indoors?
A: Providing cooler nighttime temperatures in late autumn and early winter may trigger flowering in late winter.

Q: How can I propagate Bunny Ears?
A: Detach a healthy pad, let it callous for a few days, then plant in well-draining soil.

Q: Can I leave it unattended for travel?
A: Bunny Ears can go up to 10 days without water.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
