'Green Pearl' forms a dense rosette of fleshy, spoon-shaped leaves arranged in a symmetrical spiral. The leaf surface has a powdery farina coating that gives it a soft, matte finish, and the tips and edges can flush with pink or lilac tones when the plant receives more light or experiences a drop in night temperature. Rosettes stay compact, typically reaching two to four inches across, with a blue-green base color that can shift subtly toward pink-blush in bright conditions.
When 'Green Pearl' experiences a consistent drop in nighttime temperature during the growing season, it can push up slender stalks with small bell-shaped flowers in coral or pink tones. Blooms appear once a year, typically in late spring to summer. It is pet-friendly, so it can be placed on low shelves or tables without concern for cats or dogs.
Rotate 'Green Pearl' a quarter turn every week or two to keep the rosette growing evenly rather than leaning toward the light source. Move it outside once nighttime temperatures stay reliably above 50°F, but cover it or bring it under an overhang when rain is expected, as standing water in the rosette can cause rot. Keep it away from direct airflow from air conditioning vents or heating units, though it handles the dry air that heated indoor spaces produce. It prefers temperatures between 60°F and 80°F indoors. Keep it away from cold drafts and do not let it sit in temperatures below 40°F.
It is hardy in USDA zones 9b through 11b, tolerating temperatures down to about 25°F to 30°F briefly at the lower range. It grows outdoors year-round in California, Arizona, Nevada, Texas, Louisiana, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and Hawaii. It can also stay outdoors through autumn in zone 9b areas before temperatures push it back inside.
