  •   Guzmania hybrid Red (Guzmania spp.) is a tropical bromeliad in the Bromeliaceae family, native to the rainforests of Central and South America where it grows as an epiphyte on tree branches and trunks. This pet-friendly air-purifying bromeliad brings both bold color and a practical role indoors, filtering formaldehyde and other toxins from the air while releasing oxygen at night.

Red forms a tight rosette of long, glossy, strap-shaped leaves that arch outward and stay deep green throughout the year. At the center of the rosette sits a central cup, or tank, that collects water and keeps the plant hydrated between waterings. The leaves are smooth-edged, slightly stiff, and can reach around 18 inches in length on a mature plant.

The bloom is a tall central spike rising from the cup, surrounded by vivid scarlet-red bracts that hold their color for several months. The true flowers are small and white, tucked between the bracts, and are not fragrant. Red blooms once in its lifetime, typically when mature, and after blooming it produces offsets, called pups, at the base that can be separated to grow new plants.

Keep it away from south-facing windows, where direct sun scorches the leaves, and position it away from air conditioning vents and heaters, since dry moving air causes the leaf tips to brown. It thrives near a kitchen where ambient moisture levels stay naturally higher. You can move it outside for summer in a shaded spot, but cover it from rain to prevent the cup from overflowing and developing rot. Red is sensitive to being moved once settled, so choose its spot thoughtfully and leave it there.

  •   Guzmania hybrid Red grows well under bright indirect light, including office fluorescent and LED lighting.

Water it by filling the central cup and refreshing that water every one to two weeks to prevent stagnation.

Red does best in a fast-draining bromeliad or orchid bark mix that allows air to reach the roots.

It prefers temperatures between 60°F and 80°F and should not be exposed to cold drafts or sudden temperature swings.

Red is a slow to moderate grower and needs a bromeliad-specific fertilizer diluted to half strength, applied monthly during the growing season.

It is hardy in USDA zones 10 to 12, tolerating lows only down to around 50°F before cold damage occurs. It grows outdoors year-round in Florida, Hawaii, and southern California, and in sheltered spots in coastal Texas and Arizona. It can spend summers outdoors in most other states as long as it is brought back inside before nighttime temperatures begin to drop in autumn.
  • Q: Is Guzmania hybrid Red safe for cats and dogs?
A: Yes, it is non-toxic and pet-friendly for both cats and dogs.

Q: How do I know when this bromeliad needs water?
A: Guzmania hybrid Red wilts slightly when the cup runs dry. Check the central tank first rather than the soil, since that cup is the plant's main water source.

Q: Can Red grow in an office with no natural windows?
A: Yes, it does well under standard office LED or fluorescent ceiling lights, so a windowless desk or shelf works fine.

Q: Does this plant actually clean the air?
A: Red filters formaldehyde and other indoor toxins and releases oxygen at night, making it active around the clock in an indoor space.

Q: How long do Red's bracts stay colorful?
A: The scarlet bracts typically hold their color for two to four months before fading as the plant completes its bloom cycle.

Q: Does this plant need special fertilizer?
A: Red requires a bromeliad-specific fertilizer rather than a standard houseplant formula, applied at half the recommended strength to avoid burning the roots.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
