  •   Begonia 'Reiger', also called Rieger Begonia, is a compact flowering houseplant bred from crosses between tuberous and winter-blooming begonia species, resulting in what botanists classify as Begonia x hiemalis. It originated through hybridization programs in Europe and became one of the most recognized flowering indoor plants for its ability to bloom through cooler months when little else is in flower.

The leaves are glossy, slightly waxy, and broadly ovate with lightly serrated edges, growing in a dense mounding form that stays compact and low. Foliage is deep green, sometimes with a faint bronze cast, and the stems are fleshy and upright rather than trailing. 'Reiger' holds its leaves tightly together, giving the whole plant a full, rounded shape.

It blooms in shades of red, orange, yellow, pink, or white, with double or semi-double flowers that layer over the foliage in clusters. Blooms appear primarily in winter and early spring, making it a standout winter blooming houseplant during months when color indoors is scarce. A nighttime temperature drop, typically into the mid-50s°F, encourages bud set and keeps the bloom cycle going. The flowers have no notable fragrance.

'Reiger' does well near a kitchen window where ambient moisture from cooking and washing keeps humidity elevated around the plant. It is sensitive to being moved once settled, so choosing a stable spot from the start helps maintain steady growth. Sap from the stems and leaves can irritate skin and paws on contact, cats and dogs should not be left to nibble or chew on it, and it is best placed on a high shelf or out of reach of small children. It can move outside during summer in a sheltered spot, but needs cover from rain and protection from wind.

  •   Begonia 'Reiger' grows well in bright indirect light, such as near an east- or north-facing window.

Water it thoroughly when the top inch of soil feels dry, roughly every five to seven days.

'Reiger' does best in a well-draining, peat-based or coco coir mix with added perlite for aeration.

It prefers temperatures between 60°F and 72°F and needs a nighttime dip into the mid-50s°F to set buds.

'Reiger' is a moderate grower that benefits from a high-potassium, low-nitrogen fertilizer formulated for flowering plants during the bloom season.

It is hardy in USDA zones 10 to 11, where frost is rare and temperatures stay above 35°F to 40°F through winter. It grows outdoors year-round in southern Florida, Hawaii, and coastal areas of southern California. It can spend summers outside in most of the continental United States when temperatures are warm and the spot is sheltered from direct rain and strong sun.
  • Q: How much light does Begonia 'Reiger' need indoors?
A: A spot a few feet back from a south-facing window works well, or directly in front of an east- or north-facing window. Leaves that press against a south-facing pane can scorch, so a little distance or a sheer curtain helps.

Q: How do I know when it needs water?
A: Begonia 'Reiger' wilts slightly when the soil has dried out enough to need a drink. Check the top inch of soil and water when it feels dry to the touch.

Q: Is 'Reiger' safe to keep around pets?
A: Cats and dogs should not be left to chew or eat it. Sap from the stems and leaves can also irritate paws or skin on contact, so a high shelf is a practical spot to keep it.

Q: Does this plant do well in an office environment?
A: 'Reiger' can grow under office LED lighting if the fixture is close enough to provide consistent brightness. Avoid placing it near air conditioning or heating vents, as direct airflow from either stresses the plant noticeably.

Q: Why isn't my Rieger Begonia blooming?
A: It needs a nighttime temperature drop into the mid-50s°F to trigger bud set. If nighttime temperatures stay too warm and consistent, buds may not form even when the plant is otherwise healthy.

Q: How big does this plant get?
A: Rieger Begonia typically stays compact, reaching around 12 to 15 inches in height and similar width. Rotating the pot regularly keeps growth even on all sides rather than leaning toward the light source.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
