  •   Fern 'Bird's Nest Hurricane' (Asplenium antiquum 'Hurricane'), also called the twisted bird's nest fern, is a cultivated variety of Asplenium antiquum native to the subtropical forests of Japan, Taiwan, and Southeast Asia. It grows as an epiphyte in its natural habitat, anchoring itself to tree trunks and rocky surfaces where it collects moisture and organic debris at its center.

The fronds are long, strap-shaped, and deeply ruffled along the edges, spiraling outward from a dense, dark central rosette in a swirling pattern that sets this cultivar apart from the flat-leafed standard bird's nest fern. Each frond is glossy and bright green with a contrasting dark midrib running its full length. The rosette sits upright and opens wide, with mature fronds reaching up to 24 inches in length.

Asplenium antiquum does not produce flowers. Hurricane Fern is a fern that reproduces via spores, which form in neat linear rows called sori on the undersides of mature fronds. It is pet-friendly and non-toxic to cats and dogs, and it actively purifies indoor air by filtering formaldehyde and other airborne toxins.

Hurricane Fern thrives near kitchen or bathroom moisture and does well inside glass terrariums where humidity stays consistently high. Keep it away from air conditioning and heating vents, as direct blowing air dries out the fronds. Rotate the pot regularly so all fronds receive even light exposure. Move it outside for summer in a sheltered spot, and cover it from direct rain to prevent crown rot. It is a rare cultivar with collector appeal among fern enthusiasts and tropical houseplant growers.

  •   Fern 'Bird's Nest Hurricane' grows well under bright indirect light, including standard office LED lighting.

Water it every 7 to 10 days, keeping the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged or soggy.

Hurricane Fern does best in a loose, well-draining mix of peat, perlite, and orchid bark to retain moisture without compaction.

It prefers temperatures between 60°F and 80°F and is sensitive to cold drafts, AC vents, and dry heated air.

Hurricane Fern is a slow to moderate grower and benefits from a balanced liquid fertilizer applied monthly during spring and summer only.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9 to 11, where outdoor temperatures stay above 25°F to 30°F year-round. It grows outdoors in Florida, Hawaii, southern California, Texas, Louisiana, Arizona, and Georgia. It can move outside for summer in cooler zones as long as temperatures remain above 55°F and it is returned indoors before the first frost.
  • Q: Is Fern 'Bird's Nest Hurricane' safe for cats and dogs?
A: Yes, it is non-toxic to cats and dogs and is safe to keep in a home with pets.

Q: Why are the tips of my fern's fronds turning brown?
A: Fern 'Bird's Nest Hurricane' is sensitive to dry air from heaters and air conditioning vents. Brown tips most often appear when the fronds are exposed to direct airflow or when humidity drops too low.

Q: What kind of light does Hurricane Fern need?
A: Avoid south-facing windows, as direct sun scorches the fronds. A north- or east-facing window works well, or place it a few feet back from a brighter window.

Q: How do I know when to water my fern?
A: Hurricane Fern wilts slightly when the soil has dried out too much. Check the top inch of soil before watering, and if it still feels damp, wait a day or two before checking again.

Q: Can Hurricane Fern grow in a terrarium?
A: Yes, the enclosed environment holds the humidity it needs. Make sure the terrarium has some airflow to prevent mold from forming at the base of the fronds.

Q: How big does this fern get indoors?
A: Hurricane Fern typically reaches 18 to 24 inches in both height and spread when grown indoors in a standard pot with consistent moisture and indirect light.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
