  •   Echeveria 'Tortuga' is a compact rosette succulent in the Crassulaceae family, native to the semi-arid highlands of Mexico. It is a cultivated hybrid selected for its dense, tightly packed form and slow, symmetrical growth.

'Tortuga' forms a low, rounded rosette of thick, spoon-shaped leaves in deep green with subtle blue-grey overtones. The leaf tips are slightly pointed, and the surface has a faint powdery coating called farina. It stays compact, typically reaching 3 to 4 inches across, and holds its shape tightly over time.

It produces slender arching stems in spring or early summer, tipped with small coral-to-orange bell-shaped flowers. A noticeable drop in nighttime temperatures in autumn and winter can encourage blooming the following season. This plant is pet friendly, and it releases oxygen at night, making it a good fit for bedroom shelves.

Move it outside in summer to a spot with morning sun and afternoon shade. It needs cover from rain outdoors, as sitting water in the rosette can cause rot. You can leave it up to ten days without water, and it tolerates the dry heated air common in most homes. Keep it away from air conditioning and heating vents, and rotate it every few weeks so all sides receive even light.

  •   Echeveria 'Tortuga' grows well in bright indirect light to direct morning sun, placed near an east or west-facing window.

Water it every 10 to 14 days in spring and summer, reducing to once a month in winter when growth slows.

'Tortuga' does best in a gritty, fast-draining mix of cactus soil blended with perlite or coarse sand at a 1:1 ratio.

It prefers temperatures between 60°F and 80°F and should stay above 40°F to avoid cold damage.

'Tortuga' is a slow-growing succulent; feed it with a diluted balanced liquid fertilizer once in spring and once in early summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9b through 11b, tolerating outdoor temperatures down to around 25°F to 30°F. It grows outdoors year-round in California, Arizona, Texas, Florida, Hawaii, and Nevada. It also survives autumn outdoors in Georgia, South Carolina, and coastal areas of Oregon and Washington before being brought inside before frost.
  • Q: How much light does Echeveria 'Tortuga' need indoors?
A: An east or west-facing window works well. South-facing windows can scorch the leaves in summer, so pull it back a foot or two from the glass if you only have a south exposure.

Q: How do I know if I am overwatering this succulent?
A: Echeveria 'Tortuga' will develop soft, mushy, or translucent leaves at the base when it has been overwatered. Let the soil dry out completely between waterings to avoid this.

Q: Is 'Tortuga' safe to keep around cats and dogs?
A: Yes, it is non-toxic to cats and dogs. You can place it anywhere in the home without concern for pets.

Q: How big does this succulent get?
A: 'Tortuga' stays compact, typically growing 3 to 4 inches wide and about 2 to 3 inches tall at maturity.

Q: Can 'Tortuga' survive while I am away on a trip?
A: You can leave it without water for up to ten days without any issue. Make sure it has good light before you go and skip any watering right before you leave.

Q: How do I propagate this type of succulent?
A: 'Tortuga' propagates well from individual leaves or offsets. Gently twist a healthy leaf free from the base, let it callous for a day or two, then lay it on dry cactus mix until roots and a small rosette form.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
