The leaves of 'Orion' are broad, spoon-shaped, and arranged in a symmetrical rosette that typically reaches 4 to 6 inches across. Each leaf is coated in a powdery farina, giving the plant a silvery blue-grey appearance. The leaf tips can flush with soft pink or lavender tones when the plant receives adequate sunlight.
'Orion' produces slender arching stems in late winter to spring, tipped with small bell-shaped flowers in coral to orange-pink tones. It requires a drop in nighttime temperatures to trigger blooming. Keeping it near a window where temperatures dip in autumn and winter encourages flower production.
Move it outside for summer in a spot with bright light and protection from heavy rain, as water collecting in the rosette can cause rot. 'Orion' needs rotating every few weeks indoors so all sides of the rosette receive even light exposure. Keep it away from direct airflow from air conditioning or heating vents. This plant is pet friendly, and you can leave it up to ten days without water. It wilts slightly when dry.
Echeveria 'Orion' grows well in bright indirect light to direct sun for several hours each day. A south or east-facing window works, though intense midday sun through glass can scorch the leaves.
Water it every 10 to 14 days during the growing season, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Reduce to once a month in winter.
'Orion' does best in a well-draining cactus and succulent mix, with added perlite or coarse grit for extra drainage. Never leave it sitting in water.
It prefers temperatures between 65°F and 80°F indoors and tolerates dry heated air without significant stress. Protect it from temperatures below 40°F.
It is hardy in USDA zones 9b to 11b, tolerating minimum temperatures around 25°F to 30°F for short periods. It grows outdoors year-round in California, Arizona, Texas, Florida, Hawaii, Louisiana, and along the Gulf Coast. In cooler states, it grows outdoors through summer and autumn before being brought inside ahead of frost.
