  •   Echeveria Captain Hay is a compact rosette-forming succulent in the Crassulaceae family, native to the semi-arid regions of Mexico. It grows as a tight, symmetrical rosette and holds its shape well indoors and out.

The leaves are fleshy and spoon-shaped, arranged in a dense rosette that stays compact over time. The base color is blue-green, with leaf tips that blush toward red or pink under bright light. Each leaf has a slightly powdery coating, which gives the surface a soft, matte look.

'Captain Hay' produces coral to orange-red blooms on slender arching stems, typically in spring. A drop in night temperatures can encourage it to set flower buds. The flowers attract pollinators and do produce pollen, so keep that in mind if anyone in your home has seasonal allergies.

Rotate 'Captain Hay' a quarter turn every week or two so all sides of the rosette receive even light. It handles the dry air produced by indoor heating, but keep it away from direct airflow from air conditioning or heating vents. You can move it outside for the summer months, though it needs cover from rain to protect the leaves and prevent root rot. This plant is pet friendly, and you can leave it up to ten days without water.

  •   Echeveria Captain Hay grows best in bright indirect light or partial sun, near an east- or west-facing window.

Water it every ten to fourteen days in the growing season, letting the soil dry out completely between waterings.

'Captain Hay' does best in a well-draining cactus and succulent mix, ideally with added perlite for extra drainage.

It prefers temperatures between 65°F and 80°F indoors and should not be exposed to frost or temperatures below 40°F.

'Captain Hay' is a slow-growing succulent; feed it with a diluted balanced fertilizer once a month during spring and summer only.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9b through 11, tolerating minimum temperatures down to around 25°F to 30°F. It grows outdoors year-round in California, Arizona, Texas, Florida, Hawaii, and along the Gulf Coast. It also grows outdoors in parts of Nevada, New Mexico, Louisiana, and coastal Georgia and South Carolina.
  • Q: How do I propagate Echeveria Captain Hay?
A: Remove a healthy leaf with a clean twist, let it callous for two to three days, then lay it on dry succulent mix. Roots and a small rosette appear within a few weeks.

Q: Is this plant safe for cats and dogs?
A: Echeveria Captain Hay is non-toxic and pet friendly, so it is safe to keep around cats and dogs.

Q: How does 'Captain Hay' show it needs water?
A: The leaves wrinkle slightly and the rosette loses a bit of firmness when the soil has been dry too long.

Q: Why are the leaves on my plant turning yellow?
A: 'Captain Hay' most often yellows from overwatering. Check that the soil is fully dry before each watering, and make sure the pot has a drainage hole.

Q: Can 'Captain Hay' sit in a south-facing window?
A: A south-facing window can deliver more direct sun than it handles comfortably indoors, and the tips or surface may show pale, bleached patches from scorching. A few feet back from the glass, or a sheer curtain, helps moderate the intensity.

Q: How big does this succulent get?
A: 'Captain Hay' stays compact, typically reaching three to five inches in diameter at full size, and grows slowly enough that it stays tidy in a small pot for several years.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
