  •   Zamioculcas zamiifolia, also called ZZ Plant, is a tropical perennial in the family Araceae, native to eastern Africa, particularly Zanzibar, Kenya, and Tanzania. It grows naturally in dry woodland and scrubland, where it has adapted to long periods of drought through its thick, water-storing rhizomes.

The stems are upright and arching, lined with glossy, oval leaflets in a deep green that runs nearly waxy to the touch. Each compound leaf can carry eight to twelve pairs of leaflets, staggered along a central stem that emerges directly from the soil. The rhizomes below ground are large and fleshy, which is why Zamioculcas zamiifolia needs a heavy pot to stay stable as the root system expands.

Flowering is infrequent indoors and typically requires a drop in nighttime temperature to trigger. When it does bloom, it produces a small, pale spadix at the base of the stems, close to the soil line. Zamioculcas zamiifolia is a confirmed air purifier, filtering formaldehyde and other airborne toxins from indoor spaces.

Move it outside once temperatures are reliably warm in summer, but place it where a roof or overhang shields it from direct rain, since overwatering through rainfall can waterlog the rhizomes. Rotate the pot every few weeks so all sides receive equal light and the stems grow evenly. You can leave it up to ten days without water, and it handles the dry, heated air of climate-controlled rooms without issue. Keep Zamioculcas zamiifolia on a high shelf or in a room that children and pets cannot access freely, as the sap can irritate skin and paws on contact, and the plant should not be ingested by cats, dogs, or small children.

  •   ZZ Plant grows well under office fluorescent and LED lighting, and does best in medium to bright indirect light, away from south-facing windows where direct sun scorches the leaflets.

Water it every ten to fourteen days, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings, and reduce to once a month in winter.

Zamioculcas zamiifolia does best in a well-draining mix of potting soil combined with perlite or coarse sand to prevent moisture from sitting around the rhizomes.

It prefers temperatures between 65°F and 80°F and should be kept away from air conditioning vents and heating units, as direct blasts of conditioned air stress the foliage.

Zamioculcas zamiifolia is a slow grower, adding a few new stems per season, and benefits from a balanced liquid fertilizer applied once a month during spring and summer only.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9 through 11, tolerating outdoor temperatures down to around 25°F before frost damage occurs. It grows outdoors year-round in Florida, Hawaii, southern California, Texas, Arizona, Louisiana, and Georgia. It can spend summer and early autumn outside in cooler states, provided it is brought indoors before the first frost.
  • Q: Is ZZ Plant safe around pets and children?
A: Cats and dogs should not be left to nibble or eat the plant, and the sap can irritate skin and paws on contact. Keep it on a high shelf or in a space that small children cannot reach.

Q: How do I know if I am overwatering?
A: ZZ Plant is more often harmed by too much water than too little. Yellowing stems, soft rhizomes, and soggy soil that never fully dries out are the main signs to watch for.

Q: Can Zamioculcas zamiifolia grow in an office with no windows?
A: It manages well under fluorescent and LED office lighting, though growth will be slower than in a spot with some natural light nearby.

Q: How big does it get indoors?
A: Zamioculcas zamiifolia typically reaches two to three feet tall and wide indoors over several years, growing slowly with each new stem emerging from the base.

Q: Can ZZ Plant go outside in summer?
A: Move it outside once nighttime temperatures stay above 60°F, and choose a spot with shelter from rain to protect the rhizomes from waterlogging.

Q: How do I propagate this plant?
A: ZZ Plant can be propagated by dividing the rhizomes at repotting time or by placing a single leaflet, stem side down, in moist soil and waiting several months for a new rhizome to form.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
