  •   Bird's Nest 'Nidus' Fern (Asplenium nidus), also called the Bird's Nest Fern, is a tropical epiphytic fern in the Aspleniaceae family. Native to tropical Southeast Asia, East Africa, and Australia, it grows naturally on tree trunks and forest floors in humid, shaded environments.

The fronds are long, strap-shaped, and forest green with a glossy surface and slightly wavy edges. They grow outward from a central rosette, forming a bowl or nest-like shape at the base where new growth unfurls as tightly coiled fiddle heads. A dark midrib runs the full length of each frond, and mature plants can spread quite wide, with individual fronds reaching up to 3 feet in length indoors.

Ferns in the Asplenium genus do not produce flowers. Bird's Nest Fern reproduces through spores, which appear as brown linear streaks running parallel along the undersides of mature fronds. This plant is pet-friendly and non-toxic to cats and dogs, and it actively purifies indoor air by filtering formaldehyde and other airborne toxins while naturally adding moisture to the surrounding air.

Keep it away from south-facing windows, where direct sun scorches the fronds. Rotate it regularly so all sides receive even light exposure. It does best in high humidity, so a spot near the kitchen or bathroom works well, and it thrives in a terrarium where moisture stays consistent. Move it outside in summer to a sheltered spot, and cover it from heavy rain. It is sensitive to being moved frequently, and placing it near an air conditioner or heater vent causes the fronds to brown and dry. Displayed in a basket, on the floor, or inside a terrarium, it suits both bohemian and more structured indoor spaces. It is available as a starter plant or as a mature specimen.

  •   Bird's Nest 'Nidus' Fern thrives in medium to bright indirect light, away from direct sun exposure.

It needs watering every one to two weeks, keeping the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged.

Bird's Nest Fern does best in a loose, well-draining mix of peat, perlite, and orchid bark.

It prefers temperatures between 60°F and 80°F and should not drop below 55°F.

Bird's Nest Fern grows at a moderate pace and benefits from a balanced liquid fertilizer monthly during spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 11 and 12, tolerating outdoor conditions where temperatures stay consistently above 55°F. It grows outdoors year-round in Hawaii and southern Florida. It can spend summers outdoors in California, Texas, Georgia, Louisiana, and other warm-season states before returning inside as temperatures drop.
  • Q: Is Bird's Nest 'Nidus' Fern safe for cats and dogs?
A: Yes, it is non-toxic to cats and dogs and is considered pet-friendly.

Q: Why are the fronds on my fern turning yellow?
A: Bird's Nest 'Nidus' Fern fronds yellow most often from overwatering, low humidity, or exposure to cold drafts from AC or heating vents.

Q: How do I know when Bird's Nest Fern needs water?
A: It wilts slightly when dry, and the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch. Soggy soil with no improvement after watering usually points to root rot rather than thirst.

Q: Which window direction works best for this fern?
A: Bird's Nest Fern does well a few feet back from an east- or north-facing window. A south- or west-facing window can scorch the fronds unless the plant is placed well away from the glass or behind a sheer curtain.

Q: Can Bird's Nest Fern grow in a terrarium?
A: Yes, the enclosed humidity in a terrarium suits it well. Just make sure the terrarium is large enough for the fronds to spread, as mature plants can become quite wide.

Q: Does this fern do well in an office setting?
A: Bird's Nest Fern can grow under standard office LED lighting as long as the light is on for most of the day. Keep it away from air conditioning vents, which dry the air and damage the fronds quickly.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
