  •   Bird's Nest 'Leslie' Fern (Asplenium antiquum 'Leslie'), also called the crested bird's nest fern, is a compact cultivar of the classic bird's nest fern native to tropical East Asia, including Japan, Taiwan, and Korea. It grows naturally as an epiphyte on trees and rocky surfaces in humid forest environments.

The fronds are the standout feature here — each one is deeply ruffled and crested at the tip, with a bright green surface and a slightly wavy, layered texture along the edges. The fronds arch outward from a central rosette in the characteristic bird's nest pattern, with a dark fibrous center that catches and holds the structure together. Individual fronds can reach 12 to 18 inches in length, and the plant as a whole typically spreads 12 to 24 inches wide at maturity.

Ferns in the Asplenium family do not produce flowers. Bird's Nest 'Leslie' Fern reproduces through spores, which appear as brown linear rows on the undersides of mature fronds. This plant is pet-friendly and non-toxic to cats and dogs, and it actively purifies indoor air by filtering formaldehyde and other airborne toxins.

Keep it away from south-facing windows, where direct sun scorches the fronds. It thrives near kitchen moisture and does well in terrariums where humidity stays consistently high. Rotate the pot regularly so all sides of the rosette receive even light exposure. Avoid placing it near air conditioning vents or heaters, as dry moving air damages the fronds. Move it outside for summer in a shaded spot, and cover it from rain to prevent waterlogging at the crown. Bird's Nest 'Leslie' Fern is sensitive to being moved once settled, so choose its location carefully before placing it long-term.

  •   Bird's Nest 'Leslie' Fern grows well in bright indirect light, away from direct sun exposure.

Water it when the top inch of soil feels dry, roughly every 7 to 10 days.

Bird's Nest 'Leslie' Fern does best in a loose, well-draining mix of peat and perlite.

It prefers temperatures between 60°F and 80°F and does not tolerate frost.

Bird's Nest 'Leslie' Fern is a slow grower; feed it with a diluted balanced fertilizer monthly in spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9 to 12, tolerating outdoor conditions down to around 25°F to 30°F before frost damage occurs. It grows outdoors year-round in Florida, Hawaii, southern California, Texas, Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina, and Arizona. It also grows outdoors in parts of Alabama, Mississippi, and Nevada where winter temperatures stay mild.
  • Q: Is Bird's Nest 'Leslie' Fern safe for cats and dogs?
A: Yes, it is non-toxic and pet-friendly, so cats and dogs can be around it safely.

Q: How much humidity does this fern need?
A: Bird's Nest 'Leslie' Fern needs high humidity, ideally above 60%. It does well near a kitchen, in a bathroom, or inside a terrarium.

Q: Can Bird's Nest 'Leslie' Fern grow under office lighting?
A: It can grow under LED office lights as long as the light is consistent and reasonably bright throughout the day.

Q: How do I know when to water this fern?
A: Bird's Nest 'Leslie' Fern wilts slightly when it dries out. Check the top inch of soil and water when it feels dry to the touch.

Q: Why are the fronds on Bird's Nest 'Leslie' Fern turning brown at the edges?
A: Brown edges are usually caused by dry air from an AC unit or heater, or by direct sun scorching the fronds. Move it away from vents and out of any direct sunlight.

Q: Can this fern go outside in summer?
A: Bird's Nest 'Leslie' Fern can go outside once temperatures are consistently above 60°F. Place it in a shaded spot and cover it from heavy rain to protect the crown.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
