    •   Dracaena 'Marginata Magenta', also called Dragon Tree, is a slow-growing tropical houseplant in the Asparagaceae family, native to Madagascar and parts of the Indian Ocean islands. It has been widely cultivated as an indoor tropical plant for its upright, architectural form and narrow, colorful foliage.

        The leaves are long, narrow, and sword-shaped, edged in deep magenta-red with a green center stripe running the length of each blade. New growth emerges from a central rosette at the tip of each cane, and as the plant matures, the lower leaves drop naturally, leaving smooth, ringed cane trunks exposed beneath the foliage crown. Canes can reach six feet or more indoors over many years, and multiple canes in a single pot give the plant a branching, tree-like profile.

        Dracaena marginata rarely flowers indoors, and bloom conditions in a typical home are unlikely to be met. More notable in a home setting are its air-purifying properties: Dragon Tree filters formaldehyde and other indoor toxins from the air, a trait documented in houseplant research. It is sensitive to being moved once settled, and may drop leaves or show stress after a location change.

        Rotate Dragon Tree a quarter turn every few weeks so all sides of the canopy receive even light exposure. It grows well under standard office LED lighting, and the humidity near a kitchen suits it. Keep it away from air conditioning vents and heating units, as the direct airflow causes leaf tip browning, though it does tolerate the dry heated air of a centrally heated room in general. You can move it outside for summer in a sheltered spot, and you can leave it alone for up to ten days without watering. Cats and dogs shouldn't be left to nibble or eat the plant, and it should be kept on a high shelf or in a room out of reach of both pets and small children.

It can also grow outdoors in parts of Louisiana, Georgia, and South Carolina where winter conditions remain mild.
