  •   Paper Spine Cactus - Tephrocactus articulatus var. papyracanthus, also called Paper Spine Cactus, is a rare collector cactus native to the arid, rocky regions of Argentina. It belongs to the genus Tephrocactus, a group known for its segmented stems and adaptations to high-altitude, dry environments.

Its papery, flattened spines are unlike almost anything else in the cactus world. The plant grows in a clustering, upright habit with globe-shaped stem segments stacking loosely atop one another in soft grey-green tones. The wide, translucent spines catch light and give the plant a sculptural quality.

When conditions are right, including a cool night temperature drop in winter, it produces white to pale pink blooms that emerge from the tops of its segments. Flowers are infrequent and seasonal, making them a genuine event. You can leave it up to ten days without water.

Move it outside for summer in a sheltered position, but it needs cover from rain since excess moisture causes rot. Keep it on a high shelf out of reach, as the spines and sap can cause skin or paw irritation. It is not toxic to cats and dogs, but placement away from pets and small children is the safest approach.

  •   Paper Spine Cactus - Tephrocactus articulatus var. papyracanthus grows well in bright indirect light to full direct sun, ideally a south- or west-facing window.

Water it every 3-4 weeks in summer and once every 6-8 weeks in winter to prevent rot.

Tephrocactus Papyracanthus does best in a gritty, fast-draining cactus and perlite mix with minimal organic matter.

It prefers temperatures between 50-95°F and tolerates brief dips to around 20°F when dry.

Tephrocactus Papyracanthus is a slow-growing species needing only a light, low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer once in spring and once in summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 8-10, tolerating brief frost down to around 20°F when kept dry. It grows outdoors across Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, California, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and the Pacific Northwest coasts of Oregon and Washington. It grows outdoors in Florida, Hawaii, and other warm zone 9-10 regions, especially well-suited for year-round outdoor cultivation with excellent drainage and rain protection.
  • Q: Is Paper Spine Cactus - Tephrocactus articulatus var. papyracanthus pet friendly?
A: The spines and sap can cause skin or paw irritation, so placement on a high shelf away from pets is safest. It is non-toxic to cats and dogs.

Q: What happens if I overwater it?
A: Paper Spine Cactus - Tephrocactus articulatus var. papyracanthus develops root rot when soil stays wet for extended periods. Winter is especially critical, when it enters dormancy and needs significantly less water than in the growing season.

Q: Can Tephrocactus Papyracanthus grow outdoors year-round?
A: Only in warm zones 9-10 like Florida and Hawaii. It tolerates brief frost to 20°F but needs to stay dry during cold snaps.

Q: How can I propagate it?
A: Tephrocactus Papyracanthus segments detach relatively easily and can be set aside to callous for a week, then placed on dry, gritty cactus mix to root.

Q: Does Paper Spine Cactus need a lot of light?
A: A south- or west-facing window with several hours of direct sun daily keeps growth compact and encourages blooming. Low light causes weak, pale new segments to develop.

Q: How long does it take to mature?
A: Paper Spine Cactus grows slowly, producing flowers only when mature and given cool winter dormancy. Expect several years before seeing blooms on a young specimen.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
