  •   Cereus forbesii monstrose, also called Ming Thing Cactus, is a rare monstrose form of the columnar Cereus cactus in the Cactaceae family. Native to South America, particularly Argentina and Bolivia, this sculptural cactus grows in rocky, arid landscapes with intense sun and excellent drainage. The monstrose mutation causes irregular, chaotic growth that makes every specimen entirely one of a kind.

It is immediately recognizable by its lumpy, brain-like columns of blue-green flesh covered in short clusters of pale spines. Multiple contorted stems rise and branch unpredictably in a clustering, upright growth style, giving this cactus a living-sculpture quality unlike any standard columnar form. The flesh is blue-green year-round, adding cool-toned contrast to any collection.

Mature specimens can produce large, white, night-blooming flowers, typically in summer, though monstrose forms bloom less reliably than typical Cereus. The blooms open after dark, are lightly fragrant, and close by morning. A cooler night temperature drop during the growing season encourages flowering and mimics the natural temperature swings of its native habitat.

You can leave it up to ten days without water. It tolerates the dry heated air common in most homes. Move it outside in summer to a warm, sunny spot; it handles outdoor conditions well through autumn in warm climates, though it needs cover from rain to prevent root rot. This plant is pet-friendly, though its spines make it best placed on a high shelf away from small children and curious pets.

  •   Cereus Ming Thing Cactus - Cereus forbesii monstrose grows well in bright indirect light, partial sun, or full sun and may scorch in intense south-facing windows without gradual acclimation.

Water it deeply every 2-3 weeks in summer, reducing to once a month or less in winter, always letting soil dry completely between waterings.

Cereus forbesii monstrose does best in a fast-draining cactus and succulent mix blended with extra perlite or coarse grit for optimal root health.

It prefers temperatures between 65-95°F and should be brought indoors before nighttime temperatures drop below 25°F.

Cereus forbesii monstrose is a slow to moderate grower; feed once in spring and once in early summer with diluted low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer.

It is hardy in USDA Zones 9-11, tolerating brief dips to around 25°F before cold damage becomes a concern. It grows outdoors year-round across Florida, California, Texas, Arizona, Hawaii, Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, and Nevada. Parts of New Mexico, the Oregon coast, and coastal regions of North Carolina also support outdoor cultivation.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
