  •   Sempervivum globiferum ssp. hirtum 'Borealis' is a frost-hardy succulent from the Crassulaceae family, native to rocky mountain slopes and alpine meadows across central and southeastern Europe. It has evolved to handle harsh conditions with remarkable toughness.

Sempervivum Hirtum forms tight, geometric rosettes in forest green, with leaves edged in fine hairs. It grows in a clustering, spreading habit, sending out offsets that detach and root easily, which is why it earns the nickname hens and chicks roller. The spiky green rosette shape provides strong architectural character, and a single plant quickly becomes a wide-spreading colony.

When it blooms, Sempervivum Hirtum produces star-shaped flowers on upright stems, though each rosette flowers only once in its lifetime before giving way to surrounding offsets, so the colony always looks full and vital. The plant requires a cool night temperature drop to trigger the flowering cycle.

Move it outside in summer and keep it on a balcony through autumn; it handles wind and rain without trouble. This drought-tolerant succulent tolerates the dry heated air of indoor spaces during winter and is pet-friendly, safe for cats and dogs. It works well in rock gardens, container groupings, and raised beds where the spreading habit can expand freely.

  •   Sempervivum globiferum ssp. hirtum 'Borealis' grows well in partial sun to full direct sun, requiring at least four to six hours of bright light daily.

Water it deeply every ten to fourteen days, allowing soil to dry completely between waterings.

Sempervivum Hirtum does best in fast-draining gritty succulent mix blended with perlite or coarse sand at a one-to-one ratio.

It handles temperatures from around -30°F up to 90°F and is impressively frost-tolerant.

Sempervivum Hirtum is a moderate to fast spreader via offsets and needs only a light balanced fertilizer once in spring.

It is hardy in USDA Zones 3 through 8, tolerating frost well below 0°F. It grows outdoors year-round across Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington, as well as Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, Arkansas, and New Mexico. It comes back in the colder stretches of Alaska and the upper Midwest each spring without any special winter protection.
  • Q: Is Sempervivum globiferum ssp. hirtum 'Borealis' safe to grow around cats and dogs?
A: It is non-toxic and safe for both cats and dogs.

Q: What happens if I overwater this succulent?
A: Sempervivum globiferum ssp. hirtum 'Borealis' develops root rot in soggy soil; it is far more forgiving of underwatering than overwatering.

Q: How fast does Sempervivum Hirtum spread?
A: It spreads at a moderate to fast pace by producing rolling offsets around the mother rosette, filling a container or garden patch within one to two growing seasons.

Q: Can I propagate this succulent easily?
A: Sempervivum Hirtum is self-propagating; offsets detach easily and root quickly when pressed into gritty, well-draining soil without any special tools or hormones.

Q: How cold can Sempervivum Hirtum tolerate?
A: It survives down to around -30°F and grows in USDA Zones 3 to 8, so it can stay outdoors through autumn and winter without protection in most temperate climates.

Q: Will this plant work on a balcony in a container?
A: Sempervivum Hirtum handles balcony conditions well and grows in containers placed in full or partial sun, as long as the pot drains freely so water never pools around the roots.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
