  •   Roadkill Cactus (Consolea rubescens) is a rare, drought-tolerant tree cactus from the Caribbean islands and coastal tropical regions. It grows upright and sculptural over time, earning serious collector appeal for its distinctive form and low maintenance needs.

'Roadkill' gets its memorable name from wide, flattened, segmented pads that look amusingly squashed, stacked along a woody, upright trunk. The pads are broad and smooth with minimal spines compared to many prickly pear relatives, creating a bold silhouette that develops a tall, tree-like structure indoors or outdoors.

While primarily grown for its extraordinary structure, 'Roadkill' releases oxygen at night rather than during the day. A nighttime temperature drop can encourage blooming cycles in mature specimens, so allowing natural evening temperature dips may trigger flowering in established plants.

Move it outside in summer for direct sun and fresh air. It handles balcony wind and rain without trouble and can stay outdoors well into autumn as long as temperatures remain above freezing. You can leave it up to ten days without water. The sap can cause skin and paw irritation on contact, so keep it on a high shelf away from small children and pets. It wilts noticeably when it needs water, so you always know when to act.

  •   Roadkill Cactus needs direct, full sun and the brightest spot you can offer, ideally a south or west-facing window.

Water it deeply every 2-3 weeks in summer, reducing to once a month or less in winter.

'Roadkill' grows best in a fast-draining cactus mix combined with extra perlite or coarse sand to prevent root rot.

It prefers temperatures between 60-95°F and should be kept away from cold drafts, air conditioning vents, and heater airflow.

'Roadkill' is a slow to moderate grower and benefits from a specialized cactus or succulent fertilizer applied monthly during the active growing season.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9-11, tolerating minimum temperatures down to around 25-30°F for only brief periods. It grows outdoors year-round across Florida, Hawaii, southern California, Texas, Arizona, Louisiana, southern Georgia, coastal South Carolina, southern Nevada, coastal Oregon, Alabama, and Mississippi. It also succeeds with seasonal outdoor placement in warmer pockets of New Mexico and coastal regions of the Pacific Northwest.
  • Q: How often should I water Roadkill Cactus?
A: Every 2-3 weeks during the growing season. The pads will show slight wilting when dry.

    Q: Is this beginner-friendly?
A: Roadkill Cactus tolerates dry indoor air, survives extended periods without water, and shows visible wilting when thirsty, making it accessible to those new to cacti.

Q: Does 'Roadkill' need a lot of light?
A: It needs direct, full sun in the sunniest window available. Rotate it regularly so all sides receive even light and maintain its upright, balanced form.

Q: Is it safe around pets and children?
A: The sap in 'Roadkill' can cause skin and paw irritation on contact, so placement on a high shelf is recommended for homes with cats, dogs, or small children.

Q: How tall does 'Roadkill' get indoors?
A: It develops a tall, tree-like structure over time, potentially reaching several feet in height with ideal conditions, while its upright habit keeps it from spreading wide.

Q: Can I move it outside in summer?
A: Yes. 'Roadkill' handles outdoor placement well during summer months, receiving direct sun and fresh air while tolerating wind and rain into autumn as long as temperatures stay above freezing.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
